A good overview

A good overview of Germany's WW2 military leaders - covers all branches of Wehrmacht and also Waffen-SS. The text focuses more on personality, career progression and the relationship with the Nazi regime, rather than on the characters' battlefield performance. Commanders were chosen so as to illustrate a particular personality type - eg. Friedrich Fromm as an example of an opportunistic, unscrupulous criminal, Heinz Guderian was picked for his professional brilliance, and Bernhard Lossberg for his independent thinking.
The eclectic mix of officers adds interest and a touching feel to the book, as the reader follows the fates of very different characters ranging from OKH senior staff down to individual panzer commanders. On the other hand, it also makes the coverage rather patchy, especially as many of commanders one would expect to find in the book are not covered at all - namely, most of the field marshals are completely ignored, as the authors have written another text focusing on those.
With that said, this is still a first-rate resource, especially for readers not conversant in the German language - and as long as a comprehensive coverage of all high-ranking officers is not expected, the text will surely not disappoint.

A decent well-written book but somewhat lacking in some aspects

This is a quite good book which I found largely satisfying and a pleasure to read. It is clear, informative, crisp and readable, with interesting and enlightening tidbits of knowledge with which I am not familiar. The content of the book is well-classified about which the previous reviewer Mr. O'Connor has given a very concise and clarified explanation so I see no need to add anything further. I would like instead to point out something that particularly impressed me as well as a shortcoming which I also felt during my reading of the book.
The figures introduced in this book which cover every branch of the German armed force in WWII including the three branches of the Wehrmacht i.e. the Heer, the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine and the separate and parallel existence of the Waffen SS, who are mostly high-ranking generals and also a few mid to low ranking officers and front line soldiers with distinct personalities and characteristics. For each of them, his birth, military career development, major feats and contributions to the war, and the way of ending one's life are all covered. After reading their stories, I was deeply moved by the battlefield bravery, fervent patriotism and dedication to the fatherland and/or the ideology and the leader, and the heroic and shining military exploits of those great Teutonic warriors. I was especially moved and inspired by the story of Waffen SS officer Helmut Becker for his great moral courage and stiff backbone as exemplified by his relentless intrepidity in the Soviet captivity. He never gave up to the Soviet demand despite all the cruelty and mistreatment he received from the reds and because of this unbending and uptight attitude he was executed in 1950s. A few other figures of similar heroism and different fates compared with Herr Becker are also presented in the book.
My impression is that many honorable German soldiers, irrespective of their ranking and political identification, met unfair and unjust treatment at the hands of their captors i.e. the victors of the War, not only the Soviets but also the Western allies who often framed up crimes against those Germans in a spiteful and revengeful way with flimsy, fabricated or distorted evidence which is but an indelible stain of shame on the part of the so-called Western democratic allied powers. It seems that in war and politics, the morality is often twisted to serve the convenience and purposes of both sides but in the end, the victors would always be able to whitewash and glorify themselves while the losing side invariably got vilified and reviled with few voices in their rightful defense.
Another strength of the book is that is has a very comprehensive and useful Appendixes, notes, and bibliography. I especially find the part of "Notes" to be very instrumental and appreciable as an extensive mini-store of knowledge, providing important provenances and adding relevant, interesting and informative anecdotes as a good complement to the main bodies of the book.
Now my only main complaint about the book: The space and words allotted for the different figures are sometimes too unbalanced and lopsided. It is true that the authors may have different amount of information available for themselves as well as different degrees of importance regarding different individuals, but some figures simply are given too little coverage compared to others. My point is that if the authors simply do not have enough information at hand pertaining to some figures, they may do better avoid talking about them all together than giving them short shrift in such an astoundingly disproportionate manner. A telling example of this problem is on Page 258 and 259 which belong to part 7 The Naval Officers, and the figures I am talking about Wolfgang Lueth and Engelbert Endrass. Lueth gets 18 lines and Endrass only gets 8 lines, unbelievably short compared to other figures. The book has a layout format that prints 40 lines of words on every page, and you can see how little and cursory the two aforementioned figures are handled by the fact that the spaces devoted to them occupy less than half a page and one-fifth of a page respectively.
And in this specific case, while Endrass might not be a particularly significant figure of the German navy, Lueth, according to the the authors themselves, and accurately so, is the second highest scoring German U-boat ace during the entire WWII who does deserve better and more detailed coverage. In particular, the author mentions that Lueth had also sank one allied submarine besides many merchant ships, which must be a fascinating story worth telling. Why the author did not make a better effort to describe Lueth's exciting feat of sinking the allied submarine is a lamentable and mind-boggling pity. And, as I have mentioned above, if the authors were unable to find more information on Lueth's splendid war record, they could have done better by skipping Lueth all together than giving him such a overly brief, flaccid and lackluster account which, in my candid opinion, amounts to an act of inapposite slight and disrespect to such a famed and legendary U-boat captain and great ace.
All in all, a fairly good and valuable book in spite of its flaws. Heartily recommended.

The men who followed Hitler.

I was drawn to this book, because it presented an anaysis of the german military commanders in one text. It not only provides me with the relevant info on what these men did, but it delves into the commanders themselves. It is in my opinion unfortunate that many of these very competent commanders chose to throw in their lot with Hitler. JRV
