Debridement, by Sean Dow

Dr. Jack Hastings had what he considered a satisfying life as a dedicated critical care and pulmonary physician. It was a career he loved-he could imagine no other, but fate can have different ideas. In Jack's case, that came in the form of a groundless malpractice suit.

Jack knew all to well what such a suit could do-he had seen it happen far too often with his fellow physicians. To make matters worse, the attorney filing the suit was the worst of his kind, "a scumbag who made spoiled milk smell like a fresh spring day." Looking at the impending destruction of his life, Jack imagines a creative solution, one that will permanently solve the problem. The outrageous plan occupies his thoughts until it seems like a reasonable solution-he will rid himself, and the medical community of the problem lawyer.

The plan goes smoothly, but Jack might have done things differently, if only he had known what comes next.

Cliches were overwhelming
By Trish Arrowsmith
** spoiler alert **
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review**
I was immediately drawn to the cover when I saw the book. The title, however, made me stop and question whether I would be interested in reading the book. I don't think the majority of people know what "debridement" means unless they work in a scientific field. Having looked up the meaning of the word, I found that it does fit perfectly with the story.
This book is written in the first person and I feel as though it would have been much better if it wasn't. The first 20-30 pages were filled with the narrator whining and complaining and basically stating "my life is so tough, you should feel bad for me. Look how hard I have it." I understand that the book was probably written in such a way that the reader is not supposed to love the protagonist but I don't think we are supposed to hate him either. I hated him right from the beginning.
The use of cliches throughout the book was extremely distracting. The narrator even brings mention of it which just made it even worse for me. 2-3 pages of asking and telling where the statements originated was about all I could handle.
The story line itself was interesting and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened and I am glad that I stuck with it through the end. With that, knowing that it's fiction, I can give a little leeway, but the story was not that believable. I may be a bit more aggressive in my judgements because I read a lot of true crime, mainly focusing on serial killers and murderers. If this story had taken place in the 1960's- early 1970's it would have been much more believable but with all the forensics we have out there today I don't believe the protagonist would have made it half as far as he did.

Entertaining
By Gayle A. Myers
I knew the author when I was a family medicine resident and he was a pulmonary critical care attending. It certainly seems autobiographic in the sense of the speech patterns, political references, etc EXCEPT that I know it is purely fiction. I would guess that Dr. Dow has an active fantasy life!! I was trying to locate him to send a patient to him only to find out that he had moved and that led me to Facebook and the subsequent news that he had written the aptly-titled book. I'm known to him as Gayle Schantzen. I found it quite entertaining and I'm sure any doctor that has been involved with a malpractice attorney could relate to the frustrations.

A Cathartic Comedy Based on a Daydream
By Michael P. McCullough
Sean Dow is a pulmonologist with whom I have worked as fellow members of the medical staff at Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, Oregon. This self published medical thriller is the story of a gun toting pulmonologist turned assassin, Jack Hastings, at a Southern Oregon hospital, very similar to our hospital, who gets fed up with malpractice lawyers and decides to start murdering them in order to make the world a better place. First he murders the one who is suing him, and nobody seems to notice except his friend George (also a doctor), who then blackmails Jack into murdering George’s wife, who is having an affair, which Jack readily does. At this point George starts finding clients (other frustrated doctors around the United States) who pay big money to have Jack murder the sleazy lawyers that are suing them. In the universe in which the book occurs a malpractice suit disappears if the plaintiff’s lawyer dies.

Jack starts going to the gym and gets buff while learning Kung Fu (which he actually uses to kill somebody). Jack spends a lot of time complimenting his wife Aurora, who unhesitatingly becomes his accomplice once he explains what he has been up to. Also there is a lot of wisecracking - primarily slamming liberal politics, lawyers, and, of course, hospital administrators. Eventually Jack murders a malpractice lawyer who is also a lawyer for the mob and ends up having a lot of gangsters chasing him around.

This book is a cathartic comedy based on a daydream, I suppose, and the joke is that Jack remains an excellent, competent, caring physician while simultaneously becoming a ruthless killer with absolutely no remorse. The cultural references are primarily based on television and the abundant political humor is 100% Fox News. This self-published novel is available on smashwords for $2.99 and will certainly be of interest to people who have known Sean Dow, and perhaps to other physicians who are frustrated by the current malpractice maelstrom. For people who know Sean reading this will be a truly bizarre experience as the narrator seems very much like Sean, but it is impossible to imagine him hurting people, never mind traveling around the country on a mass murder spree!
