James Hook is a child who only wants to grow up.

When he meets Peter Pan, a boy who loves to pretend and is intent on never becoming a man, James decides he could try being a child - at least briefly. James joins Peter Pan on a holiday to Neverland, a place of adventure created by children's dreams, but Neverland is not for the faint of heart. Soon James finds himself longing for home, determined that he is destined to be a man. But Peter refuses to take him back, leaving James trapped in a world just beyond the one he loves. A world where children are to never grow up.

But grow up he does.

And thus begins the epic adventure of a Lost Boy and a Pirate.

This story isn't about Peter Pan; it's about the boy whose life he stole. It's about a man in a world that hates men. It's about the feared Captain James Hook and his passionate quest to kill the Pan, an impossible feat in a magical land where everyone loves Peter Pan.

Except one.

Review

Gr 8 Up―A masterful debut novel that delivers a unique and striking perspective on J.M. Barrie's beloved world of Neverland. The focus is on James Hook, a 13-year-old Londoner who cannot wait to be an adult. His only childhood indulgence is at night, when he dreams of being the captain of a pirate ship filled with ruffians and scallywags. When he happens upon Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, James is bewitched by the lad's description of a magical world filled with mermaids and adventure. Unable to resist, he agrees to visit as long as he is back before boarding school begins. The Neverland he encounters is a dark and dangerous place, and James is shocked when Peter gleefully slits a pirate's throat. Pan refuses to return James to London, and the boy's initial admiration turns to hatred for this callous creature. Anguished and homesick, he is sickened to discover that while those around him do not age, he is rapidly maturing into a man. Hook embraces his destiny as a pirate and vows vengeance on the Pan. Filled with familiar characters such as the Lost Boys, the Darling children, and a bewitching and sensual Tiger Lily, Shrum's retelling is a deeply satisfying dark fantasy that just might change readers' perception of Peter Pan and Neverland itself. VERDICT A must-have for all young adult collections.

if you are a fan of retellings, you should add this one to your TBR list

3.5/5

Never Never is a Peter Pan retelling told from Captain Hook's perspective. This standalone novel is Brianna Shrum's debut book and I thought she did a really good job with it. I loved that it was Hook's story. It was reminiscent of the kind of hook and pan from Once Upon a Time, so if you love Hook in that show as much as I do, this is a book you will want to check out. It features an evil Pan, and a more nuanced, but very much bent on revenge Hook. This Hook doesn't hold a candle to Storybrook's Hook, but it did come much closer than I expected it to.

Never Never follows Hook throughout his life, starting out when he was a small boy. This was his first run in with Peter Pan, and it was clear that as soon as Peter tricked Hook that his hatred started. And it only grew throughout the story. Hook is a very different person than many of Peter's lost boys. He did want to grow and, and further he wanted to go home. It was then that I started to feel for Hook. But don't get me wrong, he is not a woe is me, misunderstood-villain-that-is-really-a-hero. Maybe he is misunderstood, but he is also not a pure of heart person. He is not a hero. He is still Captain Hook and his story is the one that you know well, but that was kind of what I loved about Never Never. Author Brianna Strum takes the story that we all love, stays true to the events in it, but still manages to make us see the characters in a different light. It was really cool. There were many shades of gray to labeling Hook as a Villain. It was a highlight of the book for me. I always find it interesting to see a person change throughout their life and to see how their experiences shapes them.

The romance between Hook and Tiger Lily was a pleasant surprise as well. I didn't think Never Never would have quite as much romance in it. I have always seen Hook as kind of a solitary figure so it was both an adjustment and nice to see him interact with someone he genuinely cares for. I didn't love Tiger Lily (especially towards the end) but she was an interesting character.

Bottom line: if you are a fan of retellings, you should add this one to your TBR list. Especially if you like retellings from the point of view of unexpected characters. Whether you love Hook or you hate him, I think you will enjoy Never Never.

*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

It didn't work for me
By Christina @ Books and Prejudice
I wanted to like this book. I soooo wanted to like this book. But something about it just fell so flat.

There were so many things that were good about this book, so I will start there. First off, I generally enjoy a story retold from the traditional villain's perspective. Seeing how they got there and seeing them more as heroes and anti-heroes can be an awesome experience. The world in Never Never was excellent. It's beautiful and treacherous and scary. And the plot wasn't terrible. It was rather interesting at times.

But the plot did start to get repetitive. And that was one of the problems I had. But the main issue I took was the characters. They all seemed one dimensional. I didn't understand why James wanted to grow up. I didn't understand why Peter hated adults. I didn't connect with any of the characters. It just felt... flat. And without any depth to it I had a lot of trouble getting into the story. Even with the best plot in the world I wouldn't have been able to get into it. I wanted to like this one. I wanted to love it. But the characters really held me back.

Overall?
It wasn't for me. If you're really into Peter Pan retellings you might like it. Or if you favor plot over character development. I think it's still probably worth a chance for most people to try.

A bit of a snooze-fest...

In this retelling of Peter Pan, we gain a fresh perspective on the magical world of Neverland through the eyes of James Hook. When we meet him, he is nothing more than a boy. He longs for the attention of his father and dreams of growing up and following in his footsteps as a sailor. When James decides to wander off on his lonely own to Kensington Gardens, he stumbles upon a carefree boy named Peter Pan who proudly believes in fairies. Skeptical of the existence of such silly, childish things, James comes to befriend the boy and soon finds himself flying off to a world built on dreams.

James, as the newest Lost Boy in Neverland, soon learns of the dangerous beasts that have be born into this mysterious land straight out of some child's nightmare. When James asks to be taken home, he finds himself confronted with the fact that he can never return. His heart begins to harden and his body continues to grow more or less in the usual way. Even more unfortunately for James, one of Peter's rules is that no Lost Boy can grow taller than himself; when he starts to look down on Peter, he finds himself lucky enough to escape death in exchange for exile. So he sets off to continue growing up and to become Captain Hook, a fearsome pirate and sworn enemy of the boy who stole his life away.

I went into this book knowing, based on the fantastic premise, that I was sure to come out the other side absolutely in love. So what went wrong?

I believe this had all the key elements of a good book, but several somethings just weren't working for me. I personally love a good misunderstood villain story. Not to mention another Peter Pan retelling I read recently has quickly become one of my favorite retellings of all time. And who could ignore how swoon-worthy the character of Captain Hook has become thanks to the TV series Once Upon a Time? I was supposed to love this!

Maybe my expectations were too high, though I've never before had the problem where that high expectation alone had ruined a book for me.

Perhaps it was the way the story was presented. This book is written with a style that mimics an old time-y fairy tale, but instead of feeling whimsical and timeless it just feels dated.

Or maybe it was that, as characters started dying off, I felt nothing. I couldn't care less. The characters never felt real to me. I felt so little so often while reading this book that it regularly bored me to sleep in under ten minutes. Eventually, I just willed myself to power through the last two hours of the book just so I could be done with it.

The best parts of this book were the ones right around the end that overlapped scenes I remember from the Disney film--they at least managed to give me a light tap in the nostalgic feels. But the time and frustration it took to get there just didn't make it feel worth it by the end. I honestly hate to admit how much this one disappointed me. It just didn't do it for me.
