A gem of a book!

Steve Brown has been a major contributor to the field of second language listening, through his presentations and classes, through his cutting-edge classroom materials, such as English Firsthand, and through his down-to-earth teacher training work, such as Listening Myths. Listening Myths is a very accessible, very personable, very entertaining work. It will be especially valuable for new teachers who need quick guidance on teaching approaches, but also appreciated by teacher trainers and researchers who want more background and insight into the key issues the book investigates.

Listening Myths is organized around eight popular "myths" - commonsensical and widely held beliefs that are at best faulty oversimplifications and at worst downright dangerous views when put into practice. The 8 myths (Listening is the same as reading. Listening is passive. Listening equals comprehension. Because L1 listening ability is required effortlessly, L2 listening ability is too. Listening means listening to conversations. Listening is an individual, inside-the-head process. Students should listen only to authentic materials. Listening can't be taught) are examined and deconstructed carefully. Brown shows that while each myth may contain a grain of truth, buying into the myths will lead to lazy thinking, and also to poor teaching and ineffective learning.

The book is brilliantly organized, weaving between the themes of research and application. Each chapter provides a section on "What the research says", including a summary table of relevant studies that have helped to debunk the particular myth. Each chapter concludes with a practical "What we can do" section that provides detailed clear guidelines that teachers can employ immediately to counter the myth in actual teaching situations.

Overall, I found Listening Myths to be refreshing, thorough, and up-to-date. Steve Brown has made a wonderful contribution to both research and teaching in this gem of a book!

Clever

Just when you thought it was safe to read a book, "Goosebumps Horrorland" is back in the first of seven new stories. While in Horrorland, Andy and his cousin Marnie stumble into the Chiller's House store. The owner, Jonathan Chiller, gives him a free gift - a haunted tooth. The tooth will give you unlimited wishes, like a genie. After making a few wishes, Andy starts hearing a strange howling at night. To makes things worse, Marnie starts acting weird.

I was surprised when I heard that R.L. Stine would continue the series. "When The Ghost Howls" is a clever read. I especially like the ending, which ends in a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next book.

This wasn’t one of my favorites from the newer line of Goosebumps books, but I can see where it fits into the HorrorLand puzzle. I found the main character to be a little dim, and his counterpart, the deceitful, spoiled cousin he spends his time with despite her bad attitude, extremely unlikable. I think it’s possible that Stine phoned this one in.

Not so great

I am a big fan of Zectas series and loved the previous books but I can't say the same about this one. Too many useless POV's, recycling plots with tristian and Amahan is no good. I skipped and scan pages after 70% couldn't keep up with it honestly

Continuing saga

Book 3 is the continuing saga of the Main Character, Smoke. There are some negative and positive points about the series.
On the plus side, the monsters, the races and background history are quite good. The advancement of abilities is fair, but with all the monsters being wasted, I would have expected his level and stats to be much higher.
On the down side, we have some editing errors and changes in tense which did not allow the story to flow. Also, our hero plods along learning new skills, which he has not really improved. His 'private army' continues to grow, but he doesn't use it effectively, whilst he is off soloing against a Boss monster.
In all honesty, there was nothing inspiring about the story, but nothing drastic enough to warrant a 2 star rating. An easy read.

Meh it's more of the same thing: people cant be trusted so i can screw them over and can not be trusted myself.

Entertaining, old-fashioned, railroad-themed, puzzle-mysteries

UPDATED 12-08-14: This is a 1912 collection from Black Heath of 15 short stories by Victor L. Whitechurch originally published earlier in the "Strand" magazine. The best of these feature railway detective Thorpe Hazell, credited by some as being the FIRST specialist railway detective (though that honor may actually belong to another of Whitechurch's railways detectives, Godfrey Page, who seems to have appeared earlier). Like the better known and more famous Sherlock Holmes, Hazell is eccentric, but in his own, health-faddish way; unlike Holmes, he sadly does not have a Watson. I generally prefer the stories in which he appears; these stories are very enjoyable even though they are essentially mystery puzzles. By this I mean the emphasis of each plot is on setting up the crime and then depicting its solution, not on prolonged character development, plot complications, red-herrings, or lengthy description (though I did find relevant details pertaining to early 20th century train operations particularly interesting). This results in relatively short, no-nonsense stories imparted in a matter-of-fact style refreshingly free from the flowery, overly-written language of some other authors of the era. They do have a definite period "feel" (rather than, perhaps, a period "charm"), and overall, while well-written, are not quite as artfully done as those by Doyle. Nevertheless, those in search of discovering a new batch of old detective stories should greatly enjoy this nicely-formatted set of entertaining, old-fashioned tales. BUT...

Since I originally wrote the above, a new ebook collection of 28 stories and 1 novel ("Murder at the Pageant") by Whitechurch has been issued by Timeless Wisdom; that collection provides these very same 15 stories plus 13 more and a novel for only $.99. Quite educational in and old world style

I quite enjoyed it, the stories all centred around signals and timetables and manipulating around these. No real murder mysteries as such but more on diplomatic intrigue. Not being very mechanical minded most of the workings went over my head, but the stories still held an interest and finished the book. A real insight of the workings before computers, and a real respect for the people who managed these systems without calamity and with easy.

Mystery & Suspense on the Rails

The tales in this book are a bit dated from a modern point of view, but railfans such as myself will enjoy them for the period is ever bright and fresh for us. Whitechurch was an expert on trains, railway administration, and the people who worked on the railways, and that expertise shows up in every story. He was, however, careful not to let his knowledge get in the way of a good story, so in the few times when he strays from absolute veracity it's always in a good cause. A most enjoyable book.

This is written by several physicians who are associated with one of the shunt manufacturers. The history chapter and chapter on shunt infections and complications are, in my opinion, useful.

Solid advice from someone doing it every day

As someone who has been in email marketing for 10 years, I don't usually find a book that gives me new ideas and ways to grow and monetize a list. Matt's book did! It is obvious that he has been "in the weeds" of daily email marketing and knows first-hand what works and what doesn't.

Even though email marketing has been around for a long time, the industry is constantly changing. If you want to cut through all the noise, read Matt's book. It is a true crash course that will save you years of trial and error.

Read this if you are a marketer who has not paid enough attention to e-mail marketing

I found out about the author and its experience on a Podcast at Mixergy. He was absolutely transparents on his business, traffic and income generation. So, reading this book was a priority. Matthey goes right to the point. No philosophical tales about random entrepreneurs, but step by step recommendation on every part of the E-Mail Marketing strategic and technology stack. Something I really appreciated is a list of 5 to 10 technology vendors for every task, with his personal recommendations. Making this a perfect guide for marketers who are not paying enough attention on their e-mail efforts.

Matt has what amounts to a PhD in Applied Email Marketing. This book breaks down the exact strategies and tactics you can use to grow and (more importantly) leverage your email list into a long-term asset. I've read over a dozen books on email marketing and the vast majority get stuck on the basics (like why you should setup an auto-responder). This book goes far and away above that into advanced tactics used by experts that live and breathe email marketing all day long. Highly recommended.
