The tragedy of the Warsaw Ghetto is well known in Holocaust literature, but despite the publication of numerous personal accounts, studies, and works of fiction dealing with life there, no one has ever written a complete history of the ghetto. Engelking and Leociak, researchers at the Polish Academy of Science, have undertaken this monumental task. Using unpublished archival materials from Poland and Israel as well as published literature, they have painstakingly documented daily life in the ghetto from its creation, in 1941, to its liquidation, in 1943. The authors are, respectively, a psychologist and a scholar in literature, so they examine the material from a multidisciplinary point of view. Following some background material, they proceed chronologically and thematically, beginning with the setting—the topography of the ghetto and the changes to its boundaries over time. They then examine various ghetto offices and institutions: the Judenrat, the Jewish Order Service, the Health Service, etc. They also look at aspects of economic and community life. Final chapters cover the history of the deportation of the Jews in the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp and the events occurring in the ghetto after the deportation as well as the fate of the district after the uprising in 1943. The many maps and illustrations make it possible to see exactly where things were located and where events took place. Various tables compile statistical details. Glossaries of names and terms, an extensive bibliography, and both general and name indexes conclude the book. Barbara Engelking is professor and chief of the Polish Center for Holocaust Research�at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences. Jacek Leociak is head of the Research Team for Holocaust Literature Study�at the Institute for Literary Researches, Polish Academy of Sciences. Both authors live in Warsaw.

Very detailed guide over the place that no longer exists

This book is rather not for readers expecting emotional, tragic accounts of people who survived the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising or the Nazi Warsaw. It is a detailed guide describing the place that no longer exists (not even 5 % of the original exist). The load of information is incredible, the book contains several detailed maps and plans of the ghetto also compared to the current plan, there are hundreds of addresses, information on almost every single shop, shelter, school, factory etc. It is true that the book is rather "unemotional" as you will not find much compassion nor personal accounts of this tragic time, but I assume that was done on purpose. The authors wanted focus on the information and detail, leaving all their feelings aside, since there are several other diaries, accounts describing everyday's life, hunger, diseases, terror and inhumanity of that time. I really appreciate that and recommend this book, also for people who want to visit Warsaw and imagine how everything looked some 70 years ago. It definitely helps one's imagination.

This book reads differently to a Warsaw Ghetto survivor

My father has been going back to the Library in the local Jewish Museum to see this book every time he goes in to do his volunteer guiding. He just could not get over the fact there were names of places and people that he thought no one would know or remember any more and he has had to look through it each time. At first he said it was enough that the Library had the book but he's finally given in and asked me to get it for him. So maybe the book's purpose is not straight history but like the movie 'Shoah', it aims to collect all the information before it is lost with the last survivors. I know that even if it is dry and crammed with so much detail I will continue looking through it with my magnifying glass long after my father has gone.

For the maps alone ...

I first discovered this book -- several years ago, and well before the English version was published -- in the bookshop at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw and bought it then ... even though it was in Polish (a language that my Warsaw-born-and-bred parents made darn sure I would never learn). Why? Because the maps alone make it an important book. To be able to get a sense of where various members of my family lived and worked, and how their homes related to one another (and to the rest of the city) geographically -- and then to see how the walls of the ghetto were systematically closed in upon them (forcing several to move) ... well that was worth more than the price of the book in zlotys. In its English edition, I can now benefit from the full array of Ms. Engelking's research: This is the definitive work on the Warsaw Ghetto. There are many, many memoirs from people who lived and (sometimes) survived those terrible years, and they have their value, but here -- for all time -- are the cold, hard, awful facts.
