Brutal and honest. A grunt's tale.

This is a grunt's tale. Brutal and honest, you'll find no glorious BS here. Shadix is an excellent narrator and his straight forward no non-sense (but often humorous) prose draws you in and guides you through the violence and chaos of the Korengal Valley in a surprisingly enjoyable and disturbing manner. It is written in an episodic manner that forms a loosely chronological narrative interspersed with amusing interactions among an Airborne Infantry platoon. Shadix has written a hyper-engaging war memoir that will transplant you straight into the misery and camaraderie that is a grunt's life.

This is a book by a practitioner of violence that is written for those who want to understand what is going on in such a man's head. Shadix makes clear from the start that this is his solely from his perspective and makes no apologies for that. There are people he doesn't like and he vilifies them, but even the ones he does admire he is brutally honest in his opinions. He's unforgiving and bitter and cynical, and if you're looking for a book that uplifts the spirit and reaffirms American patriotism, this is not the book for you. This book will, however, give you a sometimes hilarious glimpse into the psyche of soldiers who were asked to endure more than their share. I highly recommend this book for all who have experienced their own share of suck on the front lines, and also for all of those who have a desire to understand or just to know "what it's like." Because Shadix nails it.

Gripping and Unforgettable Memoir.

I strongly recommend that you give this book a try.

I did not expect to like the book as much, since it’s basically all about a deployment. There’s ZERO romance whatsoever. But if you do not know what our soldiers really go through when they are over there, you won’t understand the changes in our veterans as well. Because I care to understand them, I read it. And to my surprise, I found myself not being able to put it down or let it go. This book moved me.

Shadix wrote things in the way he would think and say them. He starts recounting his fasinating war story, backtracking as he needs to fill the holes. Before you know it, hours and hours have gone by, and you're spellbound. Sometimes, it’s even humorous, but more often than not, it’s harrowing.

This book is full of heart and vigor. The writing is raw. The events that transpire were told so realistically. At times, it’s painful to read. At times, you will laugh out loud. At times, you will get angry. But when it’s all said and done, you will feel like you just lived through these events alongside Shadix, whose heart lives on after the last page….

Excellent read, and very well written!

Once I started reading this book I could not put it down! An eye opening perspective on combat life most people will never know. This is an incredibly well written account of the day to day life of a soldier fighting for his country, and his brothers in the deadly Korengal Valley of Afghanistan. Humor laced perfectly inside the extreme seriousness of this story will keep you engaged, and turning the pages. Download this book right away! You will not be disappointed... You will, however, be humbled!

I wrote this book using the notes that I scribbled down while studying for the neurosurgery oral board examination. This book is not intended to serve as a replacement for the classic neurosurgical texts, but as a supplement to the knowledge gained during the long years of residency and in the early stages of practice. I tried to focus on the major aspects of diseases that a neurosurgeon may encounter, both in clinical practice and on the examination. For a more thorough helping of knowledge, consider thumbing through the texts in the reference list. My favorite is Comprehensive Neurosurgical Board Review, but I may be a little biased. That book was geared for the written boards, but the anatomy, pathology/radiology, neurology, and neurosurgery sections provide useful information that is not covered in this text. I must admit that I was a tad intimidated by the oral examination before I lived through it. I expected hear "So Dr. Citow can you please show me the incision for the hypoglossal-pundendal nerve anastomsas used for people who constantly speak out of their asses…" But it really was a fair test and a surprisingly pleasant experience. I truly got the sense that the examiners are out to reinforce their preconceived notion that the examinee (you) is indeed competent (not the other way around) and makes reasonable decisions. They are not out to trick you with obscure details. Stay relaxed and suggest exactly what you would do in everyday practice (not at the Mayo Clinic) and all will be fine. The only disheartening aspect of the test is that none of the examiners smile (but this may be their baseline state) or acknowledge that you are correct, but neither do your patients in the hospital, unless they have been on the Internet. . . . Good luck!

An outstanding work

I finally found myself in that book. I thought I was lost going through big texts of neurosurgery and I could not grasp all the information needed to pass my exam. Now that this amazing book is available I'm sure I will pass the exam . It provides a good frame for studying and contains all one needs to prepare for the neurosurgery exam. It saves time and a lot of effort . I envy younger neurosurgeons because this work is now available at their hands.. study will be much easier.

Description: This is a valuable and helpful resource that contains most of the fundamental information that a neurosurgery resident needs to know in order to pass the written boards. The book is written by specialists in a variety of disciplines, mainly neurosurgery, neurology, and pathology from the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Purpose: The book is targeted to junior and senior neurosurgery residents, who typically have little time available to absorb the massive amount of literature pertaining to the neurosurgical science. The purpose is primarily to provide a comprehensive board review for neurosurgery residents. This is a worthy and important objective and the book largely meets it. The material can also be very helpful to academic neurosurgeons engaged in teaching activities, physicians from variable specialties, medical students, and other health care professionals attentive to the field of Neurosurgery.

Audience: "Young Neurosurgeons preparing for the hurdles for professional examinations will find this to be a most valuable aid". The authors are credible authorities and have an exact understanding of what their audience wants and needs from this comprehensive review.

Features: A wide variety of topics are concisely reviewed with a special focus to deliver take home messages. The sequence of chapters is defined in the preface and the book is divided into six chapters: Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Radiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Critical Care. Neurosurgery review books at their best.

This is a perfect example of works that matured over the years into a kind of a legend. It's an excellent review source for board exams and the FRCS(SN). Personally, I think it's a must have for neurosurgical residents and registrars. Having said that, I must say, this book is NOT "neurosurgery for dummies". It is only a review book designed to draw your attention to important points and emphasize its significance. It's not designed to cover all and everything you need to know!.

PROS:
1) It is much more refined than the previous edition.
2) It is much more organised
3) Appears to Include Citow's other books under one cover. I don't recommend buying them if you buy this one.
i.e. a) "Neuoradiology and neuropathology :a review" --> LINK : Neuropathology and Neuroradiology: A Review
b) "Neuroanatomy and neuropysiology :A review" --> LINK :Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology: A Review

CONS:
1) All in American units ... Any edition for the European market?
2) Errors in the book i.e some "RIGHT side" miraculously became "LEFT side" in the book.

About the Author

Kim Flachmann teaches at the California State University, Bakersfield, where she also administers the Composition Program—from remedial English through the Graduate Teaching Assistants. She was chosen Outstanding Professor at CSUB in 1998-99. She also was Rhetorician of the Year for the Young Rhetoricians’ Conference in 2007 and was the recipient of the California Association of Teachers of English Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009. She has published numerous articles on rhetoric and American literature and has written seven textbooks—among them a college reader ( The Prose Reader (Pearson) in its eleventh edition), a series of three books for developmental English called Mosaics: Reading and Writing Sentences , Mosaics: Reading and Writing Paragraphs , and Mosaics: Reading and Writing Essays ,

(Pearson), and Nexus: A Rhetorical Reader for Writers (Pearson), which combines traditional rhetorical modes with students’ interest in

technology.

Outstanding teaching/learning tool

I used this book (2nd Edition) during university (for two credit courses in Introductory Spanish). It was very easy to follow and logical in its approach to teaching Spanish. I had previously taken French through elementary and high school and subsequently graduated with a limited knowledge of how the language worked and a poor grasp of how to speak it (arguably the most important component these days). I believe that my ability in Spanish is directly related to the composition of this textbook.
