"Throw up a Linux box," comes the chorus whenever there's a need to provide some network service or other without impinging upon the boss's martini budget. Fair enough, but by doing so are you opening security holes you don't know how to find or fix? The newest edition of Hacking Linux Exposed helps you answer that question and solve many of the security problems you find. To a certain extent this book is a recipe collection in that it describes weaknesses in Linux (calling attention to specific distributions where appropriate). The authors stop short of explicitly showing you how to wage most kinds of attacks, a reasonable thing to do from an ethical point of view even though the instructions can be found easily on the Internet. Rather than do that, they give step-by-step instructions on how to defend against the attacks they catalog. The point is not, "Here's precisely how to bring down a server by means of an ACK storm," but rather, "Here's how to defend against such problems." They do demonstrate plenty of weaknesses, though, as in their coverage of the conversation that goes back and forth between an FTP server and its client.

Refreshingly honest, thoroughly enlightening

Given the complexity of Linux systems, and the years spent hardening such systems against would-be intruders, it is amazing how a simple, clever idea can still translate into a full-blown security exploit.
I really enjoyed the format of the book. The authors don't waste time on security theories, or explaining what Linux is. They know the reader is already familiar with these, and wants to know, in concrete terms, how a hacker sees your server, and will systematically breach its security until they get root access. The authors waste no time in revealing the tools of the trade, and the security-conscious would do well to read this book from cover to cover. It is not enough to just apply patches, and turn off unnecessary services (and surprisingly few admins even do this right). One must fully understand the mindset of the hacker, and see the server from the outside.
I truly believe that no other book right now can deliver such honesty and such useful information on Linux security. If you hope to secure your servers or go into the security field, definitely read this book. You will not be sorry. :)

Can't put it down!!

The book pulls you into a hackers/crackers mind! no boring bla-bla text that puts you to sleep in 3 minutes! the only reason I gave it 4 stars is that it didn't come with a CD! Most of the books I've read came with the programs they discussed in the book, This was my only let down. I've contacted the authors about some questions and I received a fast and curtious reply. Hats off to you Gents, and I must thank Brian for his reply,about to much security, your one of the reasons I've switched from windows to linux. Try and contact Bill if ya got a question about windows!

About the Author
Dian Hanson produced a variety of men’s magazines from 1976 to 2001, including Juggs, Outlaw Biker and Leg Show, before becoming TASCHEN’s Sexy Book editor. Her 60+ books for TASCHEN include The Art of Pin-up and Psychedelic Sex. She lives in Los Angeles.

Camille Anna Paglia is the author of five books, including Sexual Personae: Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson, her groundbreaking analysis of sexual ambiguity in art and literature. Paglia is University Professor of Humanities and Media Studies at University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA, where she lives.

John Waters was born in 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland, and briefly attended New York University. He made his first film, Hag in a Black Leather Jacket, in 1964, and has since directed 16 others, including Pink Flamingos, Polyester, Hairspray, and Pecker. He lives in Baltimore.

Todd Oldham's studio is a multifaceted design studio for film, photography, furniture, interior d�cor, books, and even floral arrangements. He lives in New York City and in eastern Pennsylvania.

Armistead Maupin launched his fictive Tales of the City serial in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976, later released as a six-volume series of novels, three of which were produced as miniseries for television. He lives in San Francisco.

Finally a book big enough enough to answer all the complaints about earlier collections!!!

I have a majority of the earlier TOF collections. The most universal complaint has always been "Its too small", with the exception of the 1st printing of the "Art of Pleasure" this was the subjective case.

Now the largest collection ever has been printed in the largest format ever. Pardon the cliche, but if you must buy one TOF collection, this would be the one. True to the liner notes, it contains many never published works as well as lager repros of well known works. Paper quality and binding are above average.

When you receive your book you will get it shrink wrapped in a stylish cardboard case, with artwork on the outside of the case itself. Also of note the illustration on the dust jacket is raised and textured to match the musculature of the figure, a nice plus. Amazon has the best pricing on this. I was in a retail outlet the other day and saw the same book for $200.

The price is hefty, but once you receive your copy you can see that it is well worth it.

On a final note, based on my experience, these over-sized editions tend to get downsized and cheapened on the second printing. If you want all the extras like the sculpted dust jacket and carrying case buy the 1st edition before it sells out.

It's rather entertaining to look through all the drawings and text from the book that i didn't expect to be that huge and hefty... while it was heavy, it came with a specialized box with the exact same cover which makes it a very good collection...

Tuoko Laaksonen honored in the realm of fine art - Finally!

Tuoko Laaksonen (1920 - 1991) may have enjoyed worldwide fame as Tom of Finland during his lifetime, his fame due largely to an extensive following of those who praised his courage to paint and draw what he wanted to paint and draw rather than keeping his talent for figurative work in the dark corners of only certain bookstores. Now, thanks in large part to this very fine tome edited by Dian Hanson, the general public can appreciate the fact that not only did he appeal to a specific audience; he can now be seen as an exceptionally gifted draughtsman and artist.

Laaksonen/Tom of Finland restricted his output to figurative works that highlighted massively macho males in all manner of situations. While his work is erotically charged it always retains a brilliant sense of humor and parody: he celebrated his audience by saying it is not only OK to enjoy these works, it is also OK to see the humor in the distortion of fantasies. Many of these works in this exhaustive volume are well known, having been reproduced many times in literature and in galleries, but for the connoisseur there are unpublished works here, many of which show a more tender side to the artist. Hanson has the good idea of presenting these works of art in chronological order - another way of examining public acceptance of the artist's works - and the chapters covering sixty years of his output are arranged by decades, the Forties through the Eighties. Another fortunate aspect of this massive book is the decision to include essays and commentaries by such important writers as Edward Lucie-Smith, Armistead Maupin, John Waters, Todd Oldham and Camille Paglia.

This is a long awaited volume that places an underground artist in the same echelon with other contemporary figurative painters. It is a beautifully produced, edited, written and illustrated homage to an artist who is now recognized for his talent not only as an artist, but also as a spokesman for human rights! A Good Calculus Text, But Has Some Deficiencies

The only draw back that I find with this book, and many of the well-known and used Calculus books like Edward's Calculus, Early Transcendentals Value Package (includes Student Solutions Manual) (7th Edition) is that there isn't enough discussion of the concept of the Integral as an accumulation function. The AP Calculus tests now have placed considerable emphasis on these functions in the Free Response questions with initial conditions. The text here being reviewed is an AP textbook, and it seems, in my opinion, that there should be a chapter or two devoted to this concept and use of the Integral.

As is the complaint with many "Study Guides" for standardized exams, the practice tests and questions are too simple and are not up to level and thinking ability that is required on actual exams. The AP questions in this text seem to me, to be too simple and not up to level. For example, the AP AB/BC questions at the end of Chapter 4 on Integration do not have any Practice Questions that look like the Accumulation Function questions on the actual AP tests. I hope the Authors will give attention to this deficiency in future editions.

Even in some of the so-called "Applied Calculus" texts, there is no mention of these functions at all (unless I am missing something altogether and I would appreciate someone to inform me) except one I found Calculus Concepts: An Informal Approach to the Mathematics of Change (Textbooks Available with Cengage Youbook) which appears to have some sections and a whole chapter that discusses the Integral in this way in applications. This should be good practice for those preparing for the AP exams. I purchased it and hope it is what it appears to be: a book that discusses in depth the Integral as an Accumulation Function and fills the void that many Calculus books have in this area - even AP titles. If so, I will recommend it to students as a supplement.

Not new book

At first, I thought the product is ok even though is has a lot of folded pages. However, I just found out that the book that I got is not new at all. It was not until last week that I start to use the first chapter of the book where I found pencil marks everywhere. I tried to erase them, but they just won't go away:( I spent more than $100 on this book, and right now I feel really bad

I Funny Review by a 5th Grader

I Funny is another golden middle school story by James Patterson. WARNING: SPOILERS! I Funny is the story of a boy whose family died in a car crash and was the only survivor. The boy grows up to become a kid comedian and enters "Planet's Funniest Kid Contest" and more while testing his jokes on his foster family the "Smileys" (who never ever smile). With the help of friends and family, the boy accomplishes much. That boy is Jamie Grimm.

I am a 5th grader at Vista Verde School and I found I Funny to be a great book. Through the eyes of Jamie Grimm, I could relate his life adventures to mine and other kids across the world. Kids, more so kids in wheelchairs, hate being treated like a baby. My parents, some of my teachers, and even restaurant waiters treat me like I can't do anything and they have to do everything for me. Jamie Grimm felt the same way when people went easy on him just because he was in a wheelchair. Jamie Grimm got stage fright his first time performing on "Planets Funniest Kid Contest". Many kids have stage fright at concerts and talent shows, even me! I'll admit some of the jokes are a bit bland and it is hard to imagine a kid going to Long island all by himself just for a competition. But besides that, I Funny is a great book that many kids can relate to in their life. I recommend this book for 4-6th graders because of the anti-bullying and other concepts. In I Funny, Jamie Grimm outwits and deals with bullies, and earns respect from people all around the world. I Funny is a great book for kids while parents might not find it as amusing. All in all, I love this book by James Patterson and I urge you to read it too.

"CLEVER, FUNNY, HEARTWARMING!"

James Patterson does it again as a Master storyteller as he did in his other Middle School stories, making this one as good as 'The Worst Years Of My Life.' I find this story to be a golden winner of the series, simply because I was able to relate to events that took place, while having flashbacks of coping mechanisms and survival techniques. Of course most of us could relate to the funny, and not so funny activities that took place in middle school, and we never forget after the years have passed. But, I also related to the situations and feelings that Jamie Grimm experienced, because I've seen a great deal, and also have a special needs child. The authors clearly brought us all back to the immature groups, the bullies, and special people that reserve a place in your heart for a long time. Jamie had dreams like many, and he followed them, deserving respect and recognition of being a hero in many ways. He builds a brick wall to keep out the evil that spreads like wildfire from the bullies as he sets out on a mission to fulfill his dream. As a mom, I'm sick of bullies running amok in middle school books

This book has some good points - the main character Jamie is likeable. He is starting to work on being a comedian. A lot of readers are disappointed with the quality of the jokes, but that's realistic for a kid just starting out - a lot of the jokes will be taken from joke books or other acts. He is continuing to develop his skills in the second books (I haven't read the third yet.)

I had a hard time forgetting how tragic Jamie's backstory was, which kept me from enjoying the lighter moments.

My big problem with the book, and with all the other middle school oriented books my 9 yo daughter and I are reading, is that bullies run amok. No one ever hauls these kids in for discipline, suspension, or other punishments. The bully in this book (Jamie's cousin Stevie) is the worst I have seen yet on several levels. First, Jamie is living with him, so he is tortured at home and school. Secondly, Jamie is physically unable to counter the bully. But most importantly, the bully commits fairly serious acts of battery against Jamie and then threatens to kill him if he tells.

This is absolutely unacceptable, authors! Even the adults miss some pretty obvious clues Jamie needs more protection. Jamie's uncle finds him laying on the beach, with his wheelchair gone, with no sand tracks around him, so it's obvious he was thrown there. Jamie is afraid to say what happened, and nobody pursues this.

What kind of message does this give kids? Over and over, it's telling them that they have to work things out with bullies on their own. We need to see more of the bullies in these books ending up where they belong: in juvenile detention centers.

Satisfying Conclusion

I should preface this review by saying that I love anything and everything about Dragon Age (yes, even Dragon Age II), so my opinion may be a bit biased. That said, I loved "Until We Sleep." While "The Silent Grove" focused on Alistair and "Those Who Speak" focused on Isabella, "Until We Sleep" focuses on Varric. Amazon can give you a plot summary, but the story is framed much like Dragon Age II, with Varric narrating and occasionally breaking the fourth wall. While I was reading it, I felt like much of the wit from Origins that was lost in DAII returned. If you haven't read this series, I highly suggest you pick up these three books. The writing is good, the art is appealing, and a lot is revealed about the world of Thedas that hasn't yet been seen in the games.

A good read, especially gearing up toward DA:I

Volume 3 ties in everything that has happened on this journey to find King Maric, Alistairs father, and we see how powerful one Tevinter mage poses for the group. I would say reading Vol. 1-3 are a must for the upcoming DA;I game in 2014. We are introduced to new characters, their motives, and some new "concepts" like people having dragons blood in them.

I really enjoyed the comic book, and I would say if your a fan of the series this is a must read. Note that this follows "Biowares canon" or they path that they chose to use for books, comics and other forms of media. Well worth it, and I would even go so far as to say that you can read this without knowing anything about the franchise.

I love Dragon Age, only one complaint

It came in pretty good condition! But one of the pages had something sticky on it that kind of made a small tear on the page when I flipped through it. I didn't feel it was worth returning so I just kept it. Other than that it was in pretty good condition :)

The story itself was very interesting, it had some slow parts but I like it over all. I think any Dragon Age: Origins, specifically, Alistair fans will like this conclusion to one of the King of Fereldan's most wondered about stories. :)
