The Russian Moment in World History, by Marshall T. Poe

Is Russian history one big inevitable failure? The Soviet Union's demise and Russia's ensuing troubles have led many to wonder. But this is to look through a skewed prism indeed. In this provocative and elegantly written short history of Russia, Marshall Poe takes us well beyond the Soviet haze deep into the nation's fascinating--not at all inevitable, and in key respects remarkably successful--past.

Tracing Russia's course from its beginnings to the present day, Poe shows that Russia was the only non-Western power to defend itself against Western imperialism for centuries. It did so by building a powerful state that molded society to its military needs. Thus arose the only non-Western path to modern society--a unique path neither "European" nor "Asian" but, most aptly, "Russian."

From the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, Russia prevailed despite unparalleled onslaughts by powerful Western armies. However, while Europe nurtured limited government, capitalism, and scientific and cultural revolution, early Russian society cultivated autocracy and command economics. Both Europe and Russia eventually created modern infrastructures, but the European model proved more productive and powerful. The post-World War I communist era can be seen as a natural continuation of Russia's autocratic past that, despite its tragic turns, kept Russia globally competitive for decades.

The Russian moment in world history thus began with its first confrontations with Europe in the fifteenth century, and ended in 1991 with the Soviet collapse. Written with verve and great insight, The Russian Moment in World History will be widely read and vigorously debated by those who seek a clear and unequivocal understanding of the complex history that has made Russia what it is today.

From Booklist
In this short, muscular essay, Poe covers Russian history in its widest parameters, assessing various theses about the subject and offering his own. This is an interesting exercise for Russophiles since the historical controversies are enduring and, with regard to the Communist period, very polarized. Right off, Poe rejects the idea that Russians over the centuries have had a predisposition to authoritarianism, expansionism, or messianism--all categories of analysis one can find in the historiography both by Russians and Westerners. But surprisingly, Poe proceeds to interpret Russian history in terms that Russian leaders themselves have used to justify autocracy and territorial expansion: namely, the preservation of independence against European invaders. Since Russia achieved this goal, Poe views the features of Russia that are negative to many historians--its people's comparative poverty and abjectness before the power of the state--as a consequence of geography rather than inherent to Russian history. Students will find Poe an able provocateur of debate. Gilbert Taylor

Review
"If half a millennium of Russian history is to be distilled into a hundred pages of text, one has to have a strong thesis. Poe does. . . If those who disagree can offer a counterargument as compact, vigorous, and accessible as Poe's, the rest of us will greatly benefit."--Foreign Affairs

"Condensing 1,400 years of history into 100 well-argued pages is a remarkable feat, one Poe accomplishes in terse but powerfully stated prose. . . . Poe effectively commits to his chosen path of navigation and distills his observations and vast knowledge into a clear and well-presented theory. The author deserves credit for taking on the gutsy task of re-educating that he sees as a misinformed public with humility intact, an achievement that is a testament to the purity of his intent."--Gabriella Gershenson, San Francisco Chronicle

"Students will find Poe an able provocateur of debate."--Booklist

"This slim volume offers a sweeping yet cogent and highly stimulating reinterpretation of the entire course of Russian history from the time of the earliest settlers in Russian lands to the collapse of the Soviet Union. While intended for general readers, the author's views are firmly grounded in recent scholarship."--Choice

"The task of compressing the whole history of Russia into a hundred easy-to-read pages would be a hard challenge for any serious historian, but the proposition of building and testing in the same space an innovative concept of what Russia is about might seem beyond possible. This neat book by Poe, which many readers would find difficult to put down before turning the last page, is the tangible proof that such a task can indeed by accomplished--and with astounding ease."--Pavel Baev, Journal of Peace Research

"The thesis of this volume is that as late as the fifteenth century Russia was largely irrelevant to world history, that it became a noteworthy player in the sixteenth century, and that it remained so most of the time until 1991."--Richard Hellie, Journal of Modern History

From the Inside Flap
"This unique, interesting, and stimulating book shoehorns the whole of Russian history into a single long essay, one that is argued very forcefully and written with remarkable clarity and verve."--Reginald Zelnik, University of California, Berkeley, author of Law and Disorder on the Narova River

"This is a stimulating and timely essay, which, as intended, is provocative and potentially controversial at every turn."--Simon Franklin, Clare College, University of Cambridge, coauthor of The Emergence of Rus' 750-1200

If half a millennium of Russian history is to be distilled
By Kaushik
into a hundred pages of text, one has to have a strong thesis. Poe does: once the Muscovite state collected itself in the sixteenth century, he says, Russia embarked on an alternative path to modernity. Unlike Europe, Russia combined autocracy, "control of the public sphere," state-controlled economy, and "state-sponsored militarism." This mix, moreover, made Russia the only "sustainable society capable of resisting the challenge of Europe." With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the 400-year "Russian moment" ended -- that is, the Russian path to modernity expired, and something else now awaits the country. Much of Poe's general description will not be contested, except by those who consider Russia to be historically a part of Europe. His analysis -- that Russia had no other choice, given its location, lack of resources, and weak society -- will be. If those who disagree can offer a counterargument as compact, vigorous, and accessible as Poe's, the rest of us will greatly benefit.

This terrible piece of work is a big miss
By Daniel Carr
I feel a little strange writing a review of this book, as I got it as a present and feel that holiday pleasure-reads should not require academic work. However, the other reviews are so glowingly positive that a contrary view needs to be presented, to point out the book's many flaws. I actually came to the review section to laugh along at the other critical reviews of this book that I was sure would exist.

I found the arguments in this book to be lazy, poorly substantiated, and inconsistent. He makes flippant statements about 700 years of history, explains how his two points (geography of Russian territory and autocratic nature of Russian state) explain how history unfolded, and say that the result is a unique victory for the Russian tradition over European Imperialism. He points out that if Russia were really a part of Europe, it would look a lot more like Sweden. But it doesn't, so this is proof that Russia has a historical developent outside of the European tradition. Meanwhile, autocracy is behind the success of Russia, because it has remained independent since the 1600's, and other countries were not able to withstand the challenge posed by European imperialism - autocracy must have been the reason for that. He neglects to mention that Russia is the largest country in Europe and had a population much greater than any of the other empires there, and that its military sucesses relied on adopting European technology and administrative methods, and that it's military defeats throughout the last 70 years of its existence were probably avoidable. He never also explains how other nations that had roots outside of the European tradition (which I think means the Roman era, but I can't be sure because he doens't state it very clearly) managed to become succesful. All those Vikings he talks about early in the book...how did they end up as Scandinavian kingdoms, and a member of the Russian community? As with so many things in this book, he brings up elements of history only to discard them when they don't fit into his chosen narrative.

Another example of Poe's confusing reasoning is that the Bolshevik revolution is really a continuation of the Russian "moment in history," yet the revolution caused by the end of the Cold War signals an end to it. Why these revolutions had such conflicting impacts on Russia's role in the world is not explained - we're supposed to just accept these truths to be self-evident. The role of ideology is ignored, and his explanation for popular support of communist government changes from an understanding that autocracy was obsolete, to a belief that property rightfully belonged to all people, to the fact that there wasn't popular support for communism (pg. 75-79) His argument is so simplistic and poorly articulated that I found it really surprising to find it in print.

As for the provocative nature of the book alluded to by other reviewers...Poe's comments reach for bombasticism in their comment about the errors and "mystical politico-religious beliefs" of essentially every other author to write about Russia's relationship with Europe, but his venom is weakly substantiated - again, we're so simply go along with the story he's spinning, without support from such minor details such as critical analysis of facts.

I wish I'd made notes as I read through this, I could have made a note every page or two if I'd bothered to collect every nitwit comment, confusing statement or self-righteous blather in this book. My opposition to this book is not based on my disagreement over certain parts of his argument - I don't disagree with everything he says, and the themes of autocracy and Russian involvement in European affairs are definitely important topics in this subject. It's really the quality of the writing and of the reasoning that irks me. At 140 pages it's a fast read, but not a worthwhile one. I'm fairly confident most people would agree with my analysis of the shabbiness of this work; if you like, read it for yourself and find out. But I'd prefer it if you just didn't ever bother in the first place, because it's a waste of time and money.

First off, the quick and shallow overview of Russian history skips over many facts and developments. The only part of this condensed history that I found decent was the early ethnography of the Slavs, which is also the era of history I'm least familiar with. Perhaps it's as filled with lazy

A significant success
By P. Prescott
Marshall Poe has achieved prominence as one of the finest empiricists studying early modern Russian history. In the current essay, weighing in at a mere one hundred and thirty breezy pages, Poe finds the seeds of the modern Russian crisis in the early modern period he knows so well. It is a fascinating premise which is certain to draw fire from many quarters. But what separates Poe's book from the myriad "explanations" of the demise of the Russian empire is that this meticulously crafted essay is the work of a first-rate (and sometimes brilliant) scholar. Highly recommended.

Good English learning Series
By GTX
First of all, I've studied two English learning series and this series is one of them. well, There's nothing to write about a book. But to have a brief review I will have the pros and the cons:
* Pros:
- Q online practice, a student access code card in the back of the book and it allows you to access the online exercises and the course teacher check your progress.
- Intensive lessons
- I liked "Tip for Success" that comes on like a note next to a lesson.
- Every "same number" unite with the Q reading and writing book from the same series, has similar vocabulary and similar ideas. like when you study both in the same time you will notice that. I believe it's a plus.
* Cons:
- the price, I believe the books nowadays should be a little cheaper but they still expensive. However I liked the price On Amazon comparing with the Bookstore's price.
I would give this series 4.5 stars rating.
Finally, I'm going to sell my book when I find a good price since my book is in a good condition.
P.S. I wrote similar review for both books since they're from the same Q series.

Adventures in the wilderness, or, Camp-life in the Adirondacks (1869), by William Henry Harrison Murray

William Henry Harrison Murray (1840–1904), also known as Adirondack Murray, was a clergyman and author of an influential series of articles and books which popularized the Adirondacks; he became known as the father of the Outdoor Movement.

Born in Guilford, Connecticut, he graduated from Yale in 1862 and then served as a minister in Greenwich, Connecticut and Meriden, Connecticut. He also served as pastor of Park Street Church in Boston from 1868 to 1874. He also delivered Sunday evening lectures about the Adirondacks in a Boston music-hall that proved highly popular, and he published a series of articles based on the lectures in a Meriden newspaper. In 1869, they were published as a book, Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks.

The literary tone of the book made it extremely successful; it went through eight printings in its first year. Murray promoted New York's north woods as health-giving and spirit-enhancing, claiming that the rustic nobility typical of Adirondack woodsmen came from their intimacy with wilderness.

Although the book was to become one of the most influential books in the conservation movement of the 19th century, paradoxically, within five years it led to the building of over 200 "Great Camps" in the Adirondacks; "Murray’s Fools" poured into the wilderness each weekend, packing specially scheduled railroad trains. The book is cited as changing common parlance to use "vacation" instead of the British "holiday" for people vacating their city homes.

A Gastroenterologist's Review
By Kimberly A. Cusato
I am a board certified gastroenterologist and internist. I purchased this book 9 years ago to help me with the first of many lectures I have given on irritable bowel syndrome. Unlike many other books and articles I obtained for the same lecture, I have retained, re-read and recommended this book above all others. Thinking it was out of print, I recently loaned it to a patient who found it a wonderful, thoughtful, straightforward reference that explained a lot of her symptoms and really made a difference in her life. There is a LOT of literature regarding functional bowel disorders available to the lay-person but this one has just the right mix of science and practicality to warrant my highest recommendation.

Developed by acclaimed speech consultant and accent specialist Susan Cameron, Perfecting Your English Pronunciation features her successful method, which focuses on the anatomical placement of sound and on the musculature used in articulation. Where other accent reduction/English pronunciation products rely on solely mimicking of audio sounds, this work focuses visually, audibly, and narratively on the physical ability to speak English, noting that many sounds of English may be difficult for you because some tongue positions used in English may not be used in your native language.

The 45-minute DVD introduces you to mouth and jaw exercises to prepare you for English, then demonstrates mouth formations and tongue placement using other nonnative speakers like you. You will see and hear how English sounds--enabling you to become more and more comfortable conversing with native English speakers as you go through the program.

Mysteries of pronunciation made crystal clear!
By Heidemarie
This is a FABULOUS book! I tutor English as a Second Language to Mexican and Japanese students. For a long time I struggled hard to try to figure out how I pronounce difficult sounds in English, with no success. I was absolutely thrilled when I found this book. Susan Cameron explains and demonstrates EXACTLY how the mouth and tongue form the sounds of English and BINGO! My students really GET it now. The mysteries of pronunciation are made crystal clear! I use it for 20 minutes of pronunciation practice at the beginning of every lesson. The DVD is invaluable. There really is no use talking about how to pronounce sounds, here you can SEE how. Susan uses one hand to represent either the roof of the mouth or the bottom of the mouth and the other to represent exactly what the tongue is doing inside the mouth. The audio includes sentences, and the book has long lists of words for further practice.

I only wish there were instructions for more sounds, especially the ones my Japanese students find difficult. Also the sentences use very sophisticated vocabulary, words that less educated Americans don't even know! So I wish the sentences provided used vocabulary just above my students' level, rather than far, far too advanced. Sometimes I define the words for my students, but most of the time I ask them not to worry about it and just practice the sounds.

Piano Playing Made Easy
By skburk
I teach piano to teenagers in my church who show an interest to learn. I have been buying lesson books which are available at my local music stores. I actually found Piano Playing Made Easy at a thrift store. It is so much better, especially when working with older students! With Piano Playing Made Easy, I can take teenagers farther much faster than in the other books. They comprehend theory and read notes, indepently, much faster than younger students. I let these older students pick out songs they are wanting to play and help them apply their knowledge with assistance. Thank you for publishing this book!

The Quantum Vacuum: An Introduction to Quantum Electrodynamics, by Peter W. Milonni

In modern physics, the classical vacuum of tranquil nothingness has been replaced by a quantum vacuum with fluctuations of measurable consequence. In The Quantum Vacuum, Peter Milonni describes the concept of the vacuum in quantum physics with an emphasis on quantum electrodynamics. He elucidates in depth and detail the role of the vacuum electromagnetic field in spontaneous emission, the Lamb shift, van der Waals, and Casimir forces, and a variety of other phenomena, some of which are of technological as well as purely scientific importance.
This informative text also provides an introduction based on fundamental vacuum processes to the ideas of relativistic quantum electrodynamics and quantum field theory, including renormalization and Feynman diagrams. Experimental as well as theoreticalaspects of the quantum vacuum are described, and in most cases details of mathematical derivations are included.
Chapter 1 of The Quantum Vacuum - published in advance in The American Journal of Physics (1991)-was later selected by readers as one of the Most Memorable papers ever published in the 60-year history of the journal. This chapter provides anexcellent beginning of the book, introducing a wealth of information of historical interest, the results of which are carefully woven into subsequent chapters to form a coherent whole.

Key Features
* Does not assume that the reader has taken advanced graduate courses, making the text accessible to beginning graduate students
* Emphasizes the basic physical ideas rather than the formal, mathematical aspects of the subject
* Provides a careful and thorough treatment of Casimir and van der Waals forces at a level of detail not found in any other book on this topic
* Clearly presents mathematical derivations

Review
"A survey of some of the most important ideas about the always fluctuating quantum vacuum along with a description, based on fundamental vacuum processes, of the physical concepts of quantum electrodynamics."
--SCI TECHBOOK NEWS (1994)
"The Quantum Vacuum [is] an informative and very readable introduction to quantum electrodynamics. It is a remarkable idea that a book on this topic should be a 'page turner but I found it difficult to put down....I have not come across a better introduction to this subject than Milonnis text. All serious students of quantum theory will benefit from reading it and I have already recommended it to my students. I am looking forward to finishing working through the later chapters once I get the book back from the aforementioned students!"
--Stephen M. Barnett, JOURNAL OF MODERN OPTICS (1994, vol. 41, no. 5, 1051-1052)

Beware
By Germanp
First of all the content adresses the subject well and it is

useful for someone in quantum electrodynamics. Similar

information has been given in other books.

HOWEVER.... I have to agree with the last reviewer. This book

seems to be a copy of the original book, even though cleanly

done ! ...outside cover cheaply printed on spine, no front print,

inside pages are photocopies and not original quality press

printing !!!! In all, it looks like a well done black market copy

rather than an original Academic Press book.

BEWARE of buying this version. Other sources might be

recommended.

Good at what it covers
By Dean Welch
This is primarily a book on quantum electrodynamics, with a focus on the zero-point energy fluctuations. The thing I really liked about it is that the physics doesn't take a backseat to formalism, the same effect is also often examined from several different angles. Another nice this is that the effects of the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations on atoms is often considered.

The book opens with a chapter covering some of the earlier work that hinted at vacuum fluctuations, for example blackbody radiation and spontaneous emissions. Following this the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are derived.

Then some interesting physics is presented. The Casimir effect is covered briefly. The Casimir effect is returned to frequently throughout the book, in fact it's one of the central topics of it. The Unruh-Davies effect is derived and a physical explanation is given for it, there is also a discussion of what a freefalling observer with a charge sees. Although not mentioned in the book, the analogous effect has important implications for Hawking radiation. Many other effects are considered. One that I thought was particularly interesting is that the van der Waals force between atoms that lack permanent magnetic dipole moments is ultimately caused by vacuum fluctuations. Van der Waals forces are covered in great detail as the book proceeds.

The final four chapters read like a quick introduction to quantum field theory similar to the approach in Bjorken and Drell. The contents are roughly: the Dirac equation, some of its effects (e.g. Zitterbewegung and vacuum polarization), the realization that the Dirac equation has issues as a single particle theory, second quantization, renormalization and Feynman diagrams. One of the interesting results is the calculation of the Casimir type force caused by the electron field. Other than that, not much else from this part of the book stood out for me.

This isn't a comprehensive book on field theory in general or even quantum electrodynamics, however I do think it adds a lot of insight into quantum electrodynamics and the physical effects of the vacuum. It is very detailed in the things it covers and often adds insight by looking at a problem from several angles. I also think parts of the book would be very useful for somebody studying atomic physics.

A thoughtful account of QED
By Hanno Essen
This is an original, pedagogical, and scholarly account of quantum electrodynamics. It does not imitate other books. The author has his own points of view which are personal and insightful. The subject is presented as a part of physics with many applications to Casimir forces, Van der Waals forces, radiation and spectra of atoms, vacuum fluctuations, quantum optics etc. The author gives the impression that he explains what he has really understood and he makes you curious about the things that he has not. I like this book and recommend it; it has integrity.
