Advanced Undergraduate/First Year Graduate Linear Algebra Book

I don't know why people are degrading this book. If they don't like it then they need to choose another or use some supplementary material with it. This book is mainly for mathematics majors. It focuses mostly on theory with some applications. Usually your first course in Linear Algebra focuses on methods rather than a lot of theory. However, this book is designed for a second course in Linear Algebra. This book is used for first year Graduate Linear Algebra at U.R.I. and as a mathematics major you do need to know theory as well.

I have never seen a book which hides so many important details (and even basic definitions) in exercises. This book was terrible to learn from and even worse as a reference. It also omits or glosses over a number of important topics including quadratic forms and matrix norms.

About the Author

Elliot King, a veteran technology reporter, has been on the cutting edge of communication technology since he opened his first e-mail account in 1984. He is professor of communication at Loyola University in Maryland, founder of his school’s digital media lab, coauthor of The Online Journalist (2000), and special editor of three volumes of the Electronic Journal of Communication about journalism and the Internet.

Jeff Jarvis is an associate professor and the director of the interactive journalism program at the City University of New York's new Graduate School of Journalism. He is the author of�What Would Google Do? (2009) and blogs about media and news at Buzzmachine.com.

Digital News: Where We've Been and Where We're Going

Elliot King's Free for All is easily the best survey of the trial-and-error history of digital journalism around. King makes the fits and starts of pre-internet, pre-web technology come alive again for someone like me -- who lived and worked through it all -- and will be a real eye-opener for the generation that has grown up taking the web for granted. The book makes the technology easy to grasp and its impact on journalism easy to understand. King takes you into the minds of the entrepreneurs for whom the notion that computer networks must be excellent delivery systems for news was at once obvious and elusive. We never quite figured out how to make it work back then, and we're still trying to figure it out today. This is a must read for anyone in the media business, the technology business, or any aspect of the thinking and knowing business.

Excellent, easy-to-read history of technology's impact on journalism

Elliot King has written an excellent, easy-to-read overview of how technology and journalism have intersected and impacted each other through history. Professor King leads us to current times, where the internet and journalism seem on a collision course. Yet he skillfully provides a hopeful historical context to what is happening before our eyes, especially to print media. This book will appeal to both academics (it is meticiously researched with lots of footnotes and references) and the general public who are interested in how rapidly changing technology is impacting how we receive news and what it looks like.

Making Sense of the Craziness

Elliot King does an amazing job of explaining how we have ended up in this crazy world of 24/7 information and communication. His research is impeccable and the connections he makes are insightful and enlightening. As a lay person (non-academic), I found the book quite easy to read and actually hard to put down. Now Dr. King needs to write a book telling us how to cope with information on demand every minute of every day!

About the Author
Avtar Singh is Professor of Electrical Engineering at San Jose State University. Earlier he taught at the City University of New York and the County College of Morris. Before coming to San Jose State University, he was with industry. He has worked for National semiconductor, Anderson Jacobson, and Vivix Corporation, all in the silicon-valley. At San Jose State, Dr. Singh is involved in teaching and research in the areas of DSP implementation, biomedical instrumentation, and programmable devices and processors. He has published a number of articles in his areas of interest. He has also co-authored nine textbooks on Microprocessors.

Useful 68000/20 and x86 reference guide

This book Covers: Architecture, software and interfacing techniques for these 16-bit and 32-bit microprocessors, Intel 8086,80386 and motorola 68000,68020
I purchased this book hoping to learn more about the x86 and 68000 CPU families and programming for those architectures. This book gives plenty of necessary background information regarding the internal workings of these CPU's, while being well-written and easy to follow. The chapters are ordered in a logical fashion, firstly introducing the reader to the high level, software programming, aspect of the architecture, and then in later chapters providing very detailed information regarding the physical structure and workings of the CPU. This allows readers to easily read through the topic of their interest without being overwhelmed by other information. Although I have not read entirely through the book, I find it to be a valuable source of reference. This book provides thorough descriptions of the CPU's instructions, internal registers, memory interfacing and other important CPU-specific information. It also gives many examples, and regular exercises, for each topic covered which helps the reader to memorize what they had just read. The charts are also very clear and make the explanations a lot easier to understand. Protected mode for 80386 is clearly covered and well-explained with easy to understand diagrams and memory exercises. I recommend this book to all people with a keen interest in CPU architectures. Beginners, like myself, could try other assembly language guides, many of which are available through the internet, as this book, despite being well-written, may be a bit too much for a primer in assembly language for a beginner. But no matter at what stage you are, this book will always be a great reference guide.

A much-needed learned physician's view of vegan eating

I find this book to be such a refreshing break from the typical diet drivel put out by "big-name" physicians like Atkins. Dr. Klaper knows his nutrition, knows his medicine, and even knows his foods (the recipes are excellent.) With his kind heart, he shares the best way to save yours.

This book changed my life, for real

Dr. Michael Klaper's book "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" changed my meat-eating-meat-loving life, pure and simple. I've been an omnivore all my life (still am) and love the taste of meat. I do have qualms about the moral issues of meat-eating, but never cared enough to limit the sweet pleasure of a great steak, fish, shellfish, lamb, chicken, or dairy product. I now eat these delicacies only in small quantities due to the influence of Dr. Michael Klaper.

Dr. Klaper's "Vegan Nutritrion: Pure and Simple" approaches vegan nutrition as just that - nutrition. It's the only book that has influenced me, and only because of its nutritional approach. Dr. Klaper says the human body has no nutritional requirement for animal products, and makes a fact-based, well-researched case supporting his claim. He outlines how the human body is not built to process animal products, and why the natural building blocks of animal products are harmful to the human body.

Due to Dr. Klaper, I lost my taste for all that delicious meat, shellfish, and dairy. I still eat it once in a while, but I consider it a treat vs. every-day basic. As a result, my body is lighter, I have more energy, my mind is clearer, and my life expectancy is longer. Thank you Dr. Klaper!!

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about human nutrition!

Don Ahrens is Professor Emeritus at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. The best-selling author of two Cengage Learning texts, Professor Ahrens received the Textbook and Academic Authors Association's McGuffey Longevity Award for the 9th Edition of his market-leading METEOROLOGY TODAY. Some of the information is out of date (for example, 2009 research indicated that tornadoes in supercells need downdrafts to form, which it did not state as the case). Also, some diagrams could use some tweaking, according to my professor of intro to meteorology.

Good book, but missing several useful and interesting Appendices that were present in previous editions

Nicely written and presented, colorful diagrams, lots of technical information. However, I also have the 2003 7th edition and it has several detailed and interesting Appendices that are removed from this current version: Beaufort Wind Scales; Humidity and Dew-Point Tables (Psychromatic Tables); Weather Forecast Chart; Changing GMT and UTC to Local Time; Standard Atmosphere (detailed temp and pressure conditions by altitude); Hurricane-Tracking Chart; a larger Adiabatic Chart than the one found in the text of the recent edition; Koppen's Climatic Classification System; I don't know how many of these deletions are at the direction of the authors vs. the publisher, but for a text/reference book that cost as much as this one does, there is no excuse for removing this material from a leading textbook, in my opinion. I'd give 3 stars except for the excellently written and presented chapters.
