The tragedy of the Warsaw Ghetto is well known in Holocaust literature, but despite the publication of numerous personal accounts, studies, and works of fiction dealing with life there, no one has ever written a complete history of the ghetto. Engelking and Leociak, researchers at the Polish Academy of Science, have undertaken this monumental task. Using unpublished archival materials from Poland and Israel as well as published literature, they have painstakingly documented daily life in the ghetto from its creation, in 1941, to its liquidation, in 1943. The authors are, respectively, a psychologist and a scholar in literature, so they examine the material from a multidisciplinary point of view. Following some background material, they proceed chronologically and thematically, beginning with the setting—the topography of the ghetto and the changes to its boundaries over time. They then examine various ghetto offices and institutions: the Judenrat, the Jewish Order Service, the Health Service, etc. They also look at aspects of economic and community life. Final chapters cover the history of the deportation of the Jews in the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp and the events occurring in the ghetto after the deportation as well as the fate of the district after the uprising in 1943. The many maps and illustrations make it possible to see exactly where things were located and where events took place. Various tables compile statistical details. Glossaries of names and terms, an extensive bibliography, and both general and name indexes conclude the book. Very detailed guide over the place that no longer exists

This book is rather not for readers expecting emotional, tragic accounts of people who survived the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising or the Nazi Warsaw. It is a detailed guide describing the place that no longer exists (not even 5 % of the original exist). The load of information is incredible, the book contains several detailed maps and plans of the ghetto also compared to the current plan, there are hundreds of addresses, information on almost every single shop, shelter, school, factory etc. It is true that the book is rather "unemotional" as you will not find much compassion nor personal accounts of this tragic time, but I assume that was done on purpose. The authors wanted focus on the information and detail, leaving all their feelings aside, since there are several other diaries, accounts describing everyday's life, hunger, diseases, terror and inhumanity of that time. I really appreciate that and recommend this book, also for people who want to visit Warsaw and imagine how everything looked some 70 years ago. It definitely helps one's imagination.

This book reads differently to a Warsaw Ghetto survivor

My father has been going back to the Library in the local Jewish Museum to see this book every time he goes in to do his volunteer guiding. He just could not get over the fact there were names of places and people that he thought no one would know or remember any more and he has had to look through it each time. At first he said it was enough that the Library had the book but he's finally given in and asked me to get it for him. So maybe the book's purpose is not straight history but like the movie 'Shoah', it aims to collect all the information before it is lost with the last survivors. I know that even if it is dry and crammed with so much detail I will continue looking through it with my magnifying glass long after my father has gone.

For the maps alone ...

I first discovered this book -- several years ago, and well before the English version was published -- in the bookshop at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw and bought it then ... even though it was in Polish (a language that my Warsaw-born-and-bred parents made darn sure I would never learn). Why? Because the maps alone make it an important book. To be able to get a sense of where various members of my family lived and worked, and how their homes related to one another (and to the rest of the city) geographically -- and then to see how the walls of the ghetto were systematically closed in upon them (forcing several to move) ... well that was worth more than the price of the book in zlotys. In its English edition, I can now benefit from the full array of Ms. Engelking's research: This is the definitive work on the Warsaw Ghetto. There are many, many memoirs from people who lived and (sometimes) survived those terrible years, and they have their value, but here -- for all time -- are the cold, hard, awful facts.

Worth the small investment

Very informative. I recently became an accounting tutor and this is perfect to brush up on some accounting topics I haven't studied in a few years (Yes, funny. An accounting tutor ordering an accounting for dummies book). But it refreshes my memory and includes a lot of content for not an expensive price tag. Worth the buy!

For those who fell asleep in Principles of Management class

Simple and in layman's terms, as the book promises on the cover. It covers stuff with some examples and analogies to make things easier and sometimes more entertaining to learn and comprehend. I would recommend this book to those who are starting their own business.

A Primary Source

Booby Seale's "Seize the Time," though not well written, is essentially a primary source of the Black Panther Party--written by the Party's courageous co-founder. Much of the book focuses on the work and vision of Huey P. Newton. I was very much struck by Seale's unquestioning devotion to Newton. Having read other books by or about Party members, I realize from reading this classic book that Seale was blind to many of Newton's contradictions. At the same time, however, Seale seemed devoted equally to the freedom and self-determination of African people.
Both of these leaders took the African struggle in America to another level. They put into practice what the great Malcolm X said about "making it plain" and to defend one's self. As hard as it was, they worked to simplify the struggle rather than intellectualize it. Unfortuneatly, however, they spent more time having to overcome relentess pressures and attacks by Oakland police, the FBI, the racist judicial system, and the entire White racist society.
Seale's book is not a critical analysis of the Party, like for instance Elaine Brown's book "A Taste of Power," but it does bear witness to one of the most radical organizations ever developed in America.

This book was very, very good. Easy to read, lots of information, flows well. Covers the history of the Black Panthers from their formation in 1966 to 1969, Seale dictated the book while locked up in jail on bogus charges. This book got me interested in the Panthers, I knew almost nothing about them until I read this book, and I stayed up all night reading it, because I couldn't put it down.

Should be in a history books

In schools you are taught to think of the Black Panthers as rebels with communist intentions. The true nature of the black panthers is revealed in Bobby Seale's book. The amount of struggle that blacks had to go through in the "free" nation of America was depressing. The problem with history books is that they are sugar coated with so-much utopian ideas that you wonder if America's political system is flawless. Having a backgound of Jamaican and Indian, this book is a must for any person who's been confronted with prejudices of any sort. A must-read is the chapter "Gagged and Shackled", I honestly couldn't believe how Bobby Seale was treated.

The problem today is that blacks in America still believe that they have rights and freedoms. In essence corperate America puts rich blacks in the media instead of the educated ones. This systematic brain washing system allows for the youth of today to look up to these so-called blacks and always wanting to attain this rich lifestyle. Suggestive readings should be of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, WEB Dubois, Fidel Castro, Marcus Garvey, Angela Davis.

The "Bible" of WTO Law

It is not without good reason that this book is referred to in WTO Law as "The Bible". This book contains all the legal text relevant to current WTO law. The short and simple truth is that if you're studying or working in any field involving WTO Law, you'll need this book. Like most government or international organization publications it could use better organizing and have better indexes, but on the whole it does its job more than adequately.

The WTO Legal Texts, copublished by the WTO and Cambridge University Press, is a essential reference for anyone working on WTO issues. Although the WTO agreements are available to the public on the WTO website, as well as the worldtradelaw.net website, most scholars and practitioners will want a compact volume to carry and to underline. Cambridge U. Press has put a sturdy binding on the paperback volume. The one flaw in the volume is that it omits the plurilateral agreements, such as the Agreement on Government Procurement. It would also be helpful in a future edition to improve the usability of the Table of Contents.

It is simply the best reference guide to the multilateral trade agreements that govern global trade. As mentioned in other reviews, the legal texts are available online at the World Trade Organization (WTO) website; that said, having a hard copy is very convenient for quick reference checks.

A Fascinating Read That Won't Disappoint

Having read Dunn's first book, The Giza Power Plant, at least a dozen times, I must say that this work represents a big step forward. The previous book by Dunn left me starving for more information about ancient Egypt and their technologocal prowess. This book delivers that in spades. Not only has the level of detail been amplified, but it is clear that the author has become a lot more comfortable with the written word. His voice is clear and confident and each chapter has been edited and polished quite a bit.

For a very casual reader the book may seem a little bit intimidating due to its technical nature, but Dunn does a superb job of finding the balance between too technical and not detailed enough. The end result is a book that is very easy to read and one that presents an extremely compelling bunch of evidence regarding what the ancient Egyptians were actually capable of.

I found myself re-reading several chapters, not because I didn't understand them, but beacause what I had read was so astounding that I needed another read through just to let it sink in. This is a truly remarkable book that is surely to become one of the "standard works" in the field.

Dunn versus rock & hammer archaeologists.

I was thrilled to discover this book on Amazon recently. I am sure that over time most enlightened readers must have certainly come to the realization that (in general) archaeologists are among the most intellectually challenged of the scientific and academic communities. The basic skills of excavation and recording can be learned in a few months—but few archaeologists are properly equipped to interpret what they find.

Most archaeologists are barely able to knock out BA in history and this leads them to the MA and PhD in related subjects (such as a bucket of chert flakes) rather than more challenging fields. Despite this, most traditionally educated archaeologists are inculcated with the idea that a degree of any kind in archaeology actually qualifies them to pontificate on any subject under the sun. This is the culture and level of thinking that Dunn challenges with this excellent book.

I have always had a great interest in Egypt and have long studied de Lubitz and West and others. Here in the US I have specialized in marine archaeology and also 19th century pottery. In both cases it made sense to me to build a few boats and learn to throw a few pots. This gave me some basic knowledge and a foundation to base my interpretations on. I find very few other archaeologists (none that I have heard of or met) will ever bother to do this.

It takes an engineer to interpret the remains of ancient engineering—which is why I was delighted to find this book. While today’s archaeologists will continue to label these ideas as ‘new age’ and on the fringe, I believe the future will show that the author has made a very significant and valuable contribution to a yet to be realized full understanding of the technological sophistication of Egyptian craftsmen and builders.

Dunn has produced a thorough and challenging work—just what I would expect of an engineer! Dunn makes comparisons with modern manufacturing and engineering practices and the works of ancient Egypt. In every case he (as have others) shows that even today's machines and technology cannot produce the astonishing feats of craftsmanship and engineering that is so clearly demonstrated by the remnants of this amazing culture.

This book gives glory to the geniuses who created the temples in ancient Egypt!

Christopher Dunn has created a masterpiece in his quest to understand the extreme precision and high technology used in stone cutting in ancient Egypt. This book is at times highly technical but it needs to be because so is the subject matter. His book gives glory to the ancient but extremely advanced engineers and stonecutters who created the sculpture and temples of the Nile valley.

Reading Dunn's book will change your understanding of our distant past. At the very least after reading his book you will have to understand that the stories told by Egyptologists are wrong. You will understand that the books written by Egyptologists which are in the libraries around the world are filled with errors, unscientific storytelling presented as fact, and disingenuous information. This book will compel you to come to the realization that virtually everything Egyptologists say about how the temples were made and the stones were cut is incorrect.

If you are interested in breaking away from the myths and fables of Egyptology and want to replace those falsehoods with a truer understanding of the high technology possessed by people in ancient Egypt than you must read this book!

Pretty good

I really nice first attempt at zeroing in on and attacking Cisco devices, something I do for a living. The book, however, is NOT really a "Hacking Exposed" line from the Scambray, Kurtz and McClure camps. It is funny how fast people will buy anything tagged with "Hacking Exposed." This book does deliver some VERY good hardening and attacking techniques and I would suggest it for anyone that is in the network security field, especially those that are directly involved with the routers/switches.

Not a great book - not a bad book either

"Hacking Exposed: Cisco Networks" is not bad but then again not great. What caused it to only get 4 out 5 stars was that many of the tools and links no longer work and this review is being written in March 2006 for a book published in Jan 2006!

One example of many:
- page 521: Cisco's tcphijack
I would then have to Google to see if the tool was now elsewhere - sometimes successfully, sometimes - not.

Another example of bad tooling - page 519 - Arpworks. Yes it is still there but they fail to mention that it only works on Windows 95/98. I could go on and on.

The thing that really annoys me on this book is the binding. The softcover binding is made of some very cheap paper which curls up. For a $50 list-price book (I paid $50 for ordering it 1st and not waiting 2 months for the price to drop to $30), I would think that Osborne could have popped for an extra $1 on a good jacket quality - which would never happen with O'Reilly.

I did pick up a few tools I was not aware of, but was it worth $50?! Nope. Is it worth now $30? Questionable. If you live and breath Cisco security there won't be much new to learn here, but it does give you a reference to lend to others that keep asking you the same questions. :-)
