I hate to complain. However ...

Back in 2005 when Leonard Maltin published the first edition of his "Classic Movie Guide", he noted in the foreward that it contained over 1,000 new reviews of pre-1960 films that had begun to show up on DVD and cable channels like Turner Classic Movies, Fox Movie Channel and (Encore) Westerns. He especially trumpeted the addition of many B Westerns, including the complete filmographies of Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Hopalong Cassidy. Sure enough, glancing through the book, I noticed that it was heavily weighted toward the "sagebrush sagas" of the 1930's and 1940's, while missing some key "A" titles from the same decades. But Mr. Maltin promised that this fledgling effort would be freshened and updated in five years time; accordingly, I simply took him at his word, was grateful for the first edition, and began eagerly awaiting 2010 and the arrival of the second edition.

Well, it's here. But unfortunately, it definitely was not worth the wait. Sure it covers over 1,500 more films than the first edition - but according to Mr. Maltin himself, over 1,200 of the so-called "new" entries are the result of films from 1961 through 1965 being transferred to this book from his annual "Movie Guide". Just over 300 of the reviews in this second edition are genuinely new material that was previously unavailable elsewhere. Divided into five years, that only comes out to 5 fresh reviews a month - which is only a problem because there are dozens and dozens of older films resurfacing on DVD, cable, and the new DVD-R "manufactured on demand" programs like the Warner Archives, the MGM / Amazon exclusives, and the newly announced Universal MOD series. At best, this second incarnation of Maltin's "Classic Movie Guide" isn't keeping up with the market.

Among the missing are such titles as "The Locked Door", Barbara Stanwyck's first talkie which has been rotating fairly frequently on TCM's schedule; "The Ruling Voice", a fascinating Warner's crime drama starring Walter Huston and Loretta Young; early films currently available from The Warner Archives such as "The Flying Fleet", "Let Us Be Gay", and "Son of the Gods"; "The Perfect Clue", one of many "lost" films now found and available on DVD from companies like Alpha Video ... the casualty list goes on and on. Of course, not every title can or should be included in a reasonably sized and priced volume like the "Classic Movie Guide". But still, one is left to wonder ... are more readers going to be looking for information about "A Ship Comes In", for which Louise Dresser was nominated for the first Best Actress Oscar, and is not included - or for "Hear Me Good", a 1957 turkey that is included?

The bottom line - if you have the "Classic Movie Guide", first edition, think twice before you "upgrade". If you don't have a copy of the original, then go ahead and pick up the 2010 version. It's obviously not perfect, but depite its flaws, it's still the best mass market single-volume guide to the classics that's currently available. I give it **1/2 stars.

The Bassic Reference.

This is a great help when one wants to learn more about a film that is coming up on TV or when one had just seen it. It is very useful when one wants to identify an actor in a film one has seen. I still find some films I wish to know more about aren't listed, but this does cover a tremendous array of films, including some foreign classics.

Good but could be better

I like Maltin's review of classic movies so I can justify the cost of this compilation. Maltin's regular Movie Guide is half the cost and includes many of the classics. But if you are a classic film buff it's nice to have the classic addition handy. One improvement would be the addition of a couple of lines of trivia on the higher rated movies. Also, it would be nice if there were brief biography's on lead actors. With references to more complete information for those who are interested. Yes, I know space and expense are big factors but wouldn't it be nice to have this data in one large volume with the movie reviews. It would double your reading pleasure. I love old movies and often wonder about the lives of actors but never have a lot of time to do research on them. So it would be great to have a little more data in one volume or possibly publish Volume II with this information.

About the Author

Martin Loosemore is Professor and Associate Dean Research at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, a Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Builder and Principal of a management consultancy LRC. Martin has published numerous books and articles in the areas of risk management, crisis management and human resource management.

John Raftery is Professor, Dean of the School of the Built Environment and Pro-Vice Chancellor (External Affairs), Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK. He has published many articles and books in the areas of risk management and construction economics and recently co-edited The Construction Sector in the Asian Economies.

Charlie Reilly is Deputy Managing Director, Multiplex Facilities Management Limited and a Chartered Professional Engineer.

Dave Higgon is the Employee Relations Manager for Multiplex Constructions NSW. He has over 30 years experience in the building and construction industry including time spent as a subcontractor, trade union organiser and safety manager .

'This is quite simply the book on spiritual direction we've been waiting on for years. Perhaps some of the book's freshness might lie in the author being a New Zealander. The sub-title of the book is 'A practical introduction’ and it's almost a course in itself. There are questions for reflection, a multitude of possible exercises and sometimes the reader is invited to think about a topic before reading the relevant section of the book. There are also lots of verbatim transcripts of chunks of direction sessions. While outlining the various models of spiritual direction as well as other varieties of helping relationships, Pickering details her approach which she calls 'contemplative, incarnational spiritual direction'.

A great overview for the process of Spiritual Direction

This was a very practical guide to understanding the process of Spiritual Direction - both as a Director, and as the "Directee." As a parish pastor who engages in "pastoral conversation" on a regular basis the book was a good reminder and review of best practices.

About the Author
About the Authors...
Brent Keeth began his electrical engineering career designing radar subsystems for military applications and hybrid integrated circuits for avionics control systems. He went on to design baseband scrambling and descrambling equipment for the CATV industry and professional production and post-production video equipment for the broadcast television industry. Mr. Keeth, a principal fellow at Micron Technology, Inc., has engaged in the R&D of generations of CMOS DRAMs and currently performs extensive research in high-speed bus protocols and open standard memory design. He has served on technical program committees for both the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference and the Symposium on VLSI Circuits. In addition, Mr. Keeth has reviewed numerous papers for the Journal of Solid-State Circuits. He holds over 60 U.S. and foreign patents.
R. Jacob Baker is an associate professor of electrical engineering at Boise State University and a senior design engineer at Micron Technology, Inc. At Boise State, Dr. Baker teaches courses and conducts research in CMOS analog and digital integrated circuit design, while at Micron Technology he designs circuits for emerging memory technologies and DRAM interfaces. He is a coauthor of the popular textbook CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation (IEEE Press, 1998). Dr. Baker holds 12 patents.

Great book for the beginner or the intermediate circuit designer

This book is a great introduction into DRAM circuit design. Not only does it provide a high level description of DRAM architecture, it also clearly explains the sub blocks that comprise the entire DRAM. Transistor level circuit diagrams and critical timing waveforms are provided to more clearly describe each block. In many cases, the author provides more than one circuit solution and demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of each.

This book is easy to read, practical, informative, and well worth the price for anyone who is considering DRAM circuit design as a career or just simply wants to know more about these types of circuits. Well done!

Good tutorial into memory design field.

After reading the book, in my opinion, it covers the major points of memory design. From functional overview, memory cell, array architecture, decoding, redundancy to interface. Attached with major circuit diagrams, as well as waveforms that show cricial signal timings, I think this book serves as a complete overview to DRAM design. Another plus is the reference paper listing in the book is clear and helpful to the readers who want to continue to explore in the field.

Easy and practical

I like this book because the authors explain the DRAM concept in plain Ebglish. Besides the easy-to-understand part, the authors also list the reasons why certains things cannot be done. I think this is great because most of books only tell the readers how to design the circuit but fail to mention the tradeoff behind that.
Overall, this book is really a good tutorial for people who are interested in the DRAM design.

Good Menage Mystery

Synopsis: The heroine has the psychic ability to sense evil, as well as prophetic dreams. She is traveling across the country after breaking up with her cheating boyfriend. Late at night, alone on the highway, she sees a man who turns out to be a serial killer. When her car breaks down she's rescued by a highway patrolman who is trying to prove that there is a serial killer working in the area. The highway patrolman takes her home (where he lives with his male lover, another cop who retired after being injured in a car accident). The serial killer beings stalking the heroine since she is a witness. The cops who are determined to protect her also fall in love with her. The ghost of a boy murdered 70 years before helps point the heroine and her lovers in the right direction so that they all stay alive.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I wasn't disappointed. The characters are well developed. There are some hot menage sex scenes although they are not the meat of the book. The mystery is decent, although any mystery reader will have no problem at all figuring out who the bad guy is early on... the author makes it blatantly obvious. That's really my only bone to pick. The clues were so blatant that I find it hard to believe that the heroine, let alone the cops, weren't at least suspicious... but it's not so glaring a problem that it ruins the book. The character of the child ghost is an interesting twist. Over all a good book; the author shows a lot of potential and I look forward to reading more of her work. Well worth the price of the read.

Love love love it!

Anything written by Tymber Dalton is pure gold, this is absolutely no exception. The relationship seems to have happened pretty quickly, but it works! God, does it work. Usually I'm wary of books where the characters suddenly leap into bed with each other, but gosh, this book made it work.

I can't get enough of Ms. Dalton (Ms. Largo, Ms. Monroe, Ms. Richardson) and I eagerly devour most anything that comes from her talented fingers.

Hot Menage, Mystery, Suspense, and OMG!

HOT menage story with some suspense and mystery built in. Gotta love it!

Del and John are lovers. John is a retired highway patrol officer. Del is current patrol officer. They live together in peace and quiet in a small town in SD. Sara gets stranded in said small town and barely escapes a serial killer. Now the guys are protecting her from the killer and seducing her at the same time.

I loved the mystery and suspense. I did figure our who the killer was about 3/4 way through the book. I also liked the paranormal aspect to the story. It added something extra to the story without taking over! I also really liked how technology played a part in this story.

My only complaint is that Sara fell into the menage relationship really easily. Didn't take much for her to jump in. Even though she was relatively inexperienced and had never done anything like this before. They guys were great and their pasts were explained so it was believable. I do think they fell into pretty quickly without much discussion as well.

Good Story! I'll have to check out more from this author!

What really happened in the Middle Ages?

WITCHCRAFT AND MAGIC IN EUROPE: THE MIDDLE AGES is the third book I've read in this series of six books edited by Bengt Ankarloo and Stuart Clark. So far my favorite has been the first (chronologically) which focused on "Biblical and Pagan Societies" although "The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries" was equally well written. In November 2002, the fourth book in the chronology "The Period of the Witch Trials" is scheduled for publication and I can hardly wait to read it. "The Middle Ages" volume ends just as the wicked Malleus Maleficarum is published 1487 and if you've studied this topic you know what comes next.
Historians participating in the 'Witchcraft' project are university scholars and experts in their respective topics. Their research is intensive and exhaustive. At times, sections read like a thriller novel and at times only a scholar could love the work. Topics and authors in this volume include (in addition to Peters below) 'Medieval Magic: Definitions, Beliefs, Practices' by Karen Jolly of the University of Hawaii, and 'Trolldomr Rituals' by Catherina Rudvere of Lund University.
Jolly suggests the concept/phenomena of magic is difficult to identify and describe, let alone explain. She tracks developments in the early Middle Ages and discovers magic for the devout Christian serf or aristocrat was not at all comparable to notions depicted in some fanciful modern films and books. No green-faced wart-covered old hags lived in Europe in the old days. Those biddies bloomed in the art of the Renaissance. Jolly suggests Christian beliefs, rituals and medical practices merged with local native traditions and formed something different from the religion preached in the Levant by early Church fathers. Rudvere's work is incredible. She deals with material that is over 1,000 years old from the Scandanavian cultures.
Part 3 of the book, 'The Medieval Church and State on Superstition, Magic, and Witchcraft From Augustine to the Sixteenth Century' by Edward Peters of the University of Pennsylvania takes the reader up to the end of the Middle Ages in Europe when the Malleus Maleficarum was published in 1487. To their credit, many Roman Catholic leaders and clergy thought the Malleus Maleficarum was "over the top" and the work of a crackpot. Sadly, interest in the book was renewed during the Protestant Reformation when "Christians" used the book to "purify the church" -- the period to be covered by the "Witch Trials" mentioned above.
Peters essay attempts to explain why persecution of "witches" and "heretics" evolved after the 12th Century. Certainly a renewed interest in the writings of the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians and the emergence of groups like the Cathars and Waldensians stirred the pot. However, Peters suggests the real reason persecution took such a decidely evil turn had to do with politics and land grabs. A handy way to rid yourself of someone you envied or whose goods you coveted was to accuse them of witchcraft. The clergy became involved because they felt a need to root out the devil, but sometimes they were connected to greedy princes who needed churchly approval.
As has been the case with the other books in the serieis, all the essays in this book are informative. If you have an interest in the topic of Wicca, witchcraft, or paganism and want to learn more about what probably happened in the Middle Ages in Western Europe, read the book.

A good book on germanic witchcraft

This book is the best and most clear explanation of Norse witchcraft I have ever read in one place. It is unadulterated by trying to tie in other traditions which may have been a latter addition.

Another precious element to this book is the brush with what little is known about the Vanir. All information about the Vanir, when properly sourced, is invaluable. It is a great mystery concerning the history of Scandinavia that so little is known of the Vanir.

As the title says, this book is about witchcraft, not comments on a religious structure.

Important, unbiased, outstanding

For various reasons, Henry VII and his place in history are hard to understand; historians debate about whether he was a conscious innovator, propelling England toward the modern age, or a traditional late medieval king. Much of what one would like to know about him will probably never be known, because many of his important actions were never recorded in writing, much that was has not survived, and some of the surviving sources have never been carefully examined.

This book is a treasure, deserving careful reading and rereading. It avoids propounding conjectures, and instead provides a careful, detailed account of what we do know about Henry VII, his reign, his policies and the situations he dealt with. What emerges from this gives me the following views. Henry governed for 24 years mostly by using the forms and laws and methods of his Plantagenet predecessors, but using them in ways his predecessors had not, so that he could usually rely upon even his enemies in England to carry out his desires, as he had to, given that more than half the nobility and gentry had cause at one time or another to resent him and wish him dead. By using unorthodox approaches within the existing framework he transformed the role of English royalty, although he quite likely had no conscious intention of doing anything more dramatic than keeping himself and his heirs alive and ensuring a peaceful succession. That was enough so that he and the next four monarchs died peacefully in their beds, which when he seized the throne would have seemed quite unlikely. By careful, detailed, diligent and often secretive oversight, he kept England relatively free of both foreign wars and domestic insurrections, and this enabled the gentry and the yeomen and merchants to become far more prosperous than they were when he took the throne. Evidently he created an excellent intelligence service to warn him of plots before they matured, and with the information from that he acted promptly and wisely against threats, using minimal force.

He has a reputation as a miser; this seems to me undeserved. He greatly increased government revenue, by various schemes, some of dubious legality, but he seems to me to have considered money primarily to be a crucial lever of power. By rewarding those who served him well, and by threatening to ruin potential opponents by fines and bail bonds, of which he actually collected very few, he got loyal service from many who had no cause to love him.

He also has a reputation as a tyrant, and he could be when he felt that to be necessary. But he avoided tyrannizing over the merchants and yeomen and most of the gentry; his tyranny, if it was such, was aimed at convincing the nobility that they must obey the king, rather than regarding the king as just first among equals, as the nobility had come to believe they could during the later part of the Plantagenet era. Among other things, this determination of Henry's was instrumental in greatly reducing the violent confrontations between members of the nobility which had been so common and so destructive for most of the 14th and 15th Centuries.

Not least among the virtues of this book is a thorough, extensive list of sources for further reading. Indeed, the only criticism I have of the book is that I wish it included among its illustrations, or as its cover illustration, the 1505 portrait painting from life that's now in the British National Portrait Gallery. All the other portraits of Henry VII that we have today were painted or drawn after his death, relying on his death mask and/or the effigy on his tomb; all of those give Henry a look of gloom that does not seem to have been characteristic of him, whereas the one portrait from life makes him look amiable and faintly amused.

(3.5 stars) Has its merits, but a bit dry in the second half

The earlier part of this book, dealing with Henry Tudor's family background and youth, was really interesting. It also maintained my interest as it dealt with Henry's life and work up until the deaths of his son Arthur and his wife, and as it studied his battles with Perkin Warbeck. But at some point in the chapter `Tudor government at work', it began to lose my interest; then, as it went on, it lost my interest more and more, until I found I had to skim some parts because I just couldn't focus on the dry details about the government of England.

A passage such as this is a good example of what's boring about the latter half:

"Henry also introduced a clear way of calculating the duty due on particular types of goods, by giving them a formal value in a book of rates. The book was in use in the port of London in 1502. When the values given to imported goods were realistic and accurate reflections of the market price, the crown was guaranteed a regular rate of customs duty. When prices began to differ from the formal valuation, merchants began either to pay too much duty on their goods or the crown's income fell as prices of goods increased. During the prosperous years of Henry VII's reign this did not become a problem, but later Tudor monarchs attempted to compensate for the static nature of the rates by reissuing them for various ports in line with inflation."

Bor-ing. Though it's still worth reading. The chapter `The rigours of kingship' ends with Henry's death and funeral, which is where the `biography' ends. After that, it gets drier and drier, so that only those seeking an endless succession of facts on the era will probably find that their attention is held.

Four stars for the biography contained in the first 119 pages vs. three stars for the dull-but-worthy history that follows = 3.5 stars.

A thorough study of an oft-neglected Monarch

The amount of material on the 16th century Tudor Monarchs is vast-- especially with regard to King Henry VIII, his wives and Queen Elizabeth I. Queen "Bloody" Mary and King Edward VI have also been written about a good deal. But the founder of the Tudor dynasty, easily the most fascinating and embattled dynasty of the English Crown, has been relegated to a historical footnote. Recently I decided to search for a book about Henry VII and was surprised to find very little available, most of which had been published nearly 100 years ago. This study, published in 2007, is fortunately available through Amazon and is a thoroughly researched account of Henry VII's early life, claim and rise to the throne of England. The politics of any monarchy can be complicated, but the multiple claims to England's crown in the late Middle Ages make things downright murky. The author does his best to sort things out, although I did occasionally find myself re-reading paragraphs here and there to make sure I understood things.
Often portrayed as a cold fish, interested only in the accumulation of wealth and power, manipulating the Church to keep it on his side, Henry VII is shown to have his human side as well. A man of intelligence, skill, and incredible political instincts, he not only secured the throne on what appeared to be a very precarious claim, he maintained it to the end of his life, keeping England generally at peace and prospering. His court was certainly a Medieval one, lacking the flash and flair of the continental courts, but neither was it intellectually or artistically impoverished. Much has been made of his scheming to keep Catherine of Aragon in England for his second son, Henry, after Prince Arthur, to whome she was married in childhood, dies, causing Henry VII to seem interested only in maintaining the Tudor dynasty and not caring about anything or anyone else. Next-born son Henry (soon to become Henry VIII) is brought back to the court after a lifetime of being prepared for a church career and 'second son' status, and told he will marry his dead brother's widow, a young lady 5 years older than he. But what we learn here is that Henry VII is genuinely heart-broken on learning of eldest son's death, and immediately went to his wife's (the Queen-mother Elizabeth) chambers to comfort her as best he could. Neither would see anyone for two days and remained together in isolation. The Queen Mother's heartbreak was so great she died not long after her eldest son. So Henry at the end of his life does indeed become withdrawn, barely social, only working on the affairs of state and grooming his son Henry, Prince of York now Prince of Wales, to assume the reins of the kingdom. It is a reaction all too human in many men who suffered great personal tragedies in a short period of time after a lifetime of hard work.
The results of Henry VII's policies, and his influence on the Monarchy is also examined; King Henry VII, largely known as the father of the (in)famous Henry VIII, is shown to have more greatly shaped the future of English political beliefs and strategies than many would believe. He was often forgiving of his enemies, was judicious and rather sparing by the standards of the day with executions, never embarked on wholesale persecutions to show power, and expanded England's wealth and grew trade. He passed onto his son a stable, wealthy and prospering kingdom, but not, unfortunately, any of the traits that would keep it growing (Henry VIII often went back on his word, executed over 15,000 of his subjects, lost territories, and bankrupted the nation; it took the 5th and last Tudor, Elizabeth I, to restore and increase what the first Tudor created).
For research and thoroughness and detail, this books gets 5 stars, however, it must be admitted that it can be a difficult and dense read. Worthwhile though, for any student of this fascinating period of English history.
