"Gardner's book... is written in a clear, attractive style. Gardner... deal[s] with difficult topics with clarity and depth. He gives a clear treatment of the cases, along with an effective critique, and he discusses the issues in the light of the political models. In short, he does succeed in carrying out the Series' aim of providing 'a general perspective of legal ideas and problems which will make their detailed study more rewarding'... This book serves two different audiences. First, it serves an undergraduate student audience. For undergraduate students, the book provides a clear introduction to trust law. It focuses on the different reasons that the courts might have for adopting particular rules. For more advanced students, the book provides a well-researched commentary on many of the more disputed areas of trust law. It does this through its footnotes, which tend to contain substantial discussion of these topics.
