The story doesn't end and the information from the other Raintree books show/says the story changes who the lead characters are other members of the raintree family. I am guessing that the over all story of the fighting between families finish with the other two books but I would like to finish the love story of these two characters first. Over all I was very said by this purchase, wish i didn't buy it, and will not buy the rest.

In this groundbreaking and important book, Danielle McGuire writes about the rape in 1944 of a twenty-four-year-old mother and sharecropper, Recy Taylor, who strolled toward home after an evening of singing and praying at the Rock Hill Holiness Church in Abbeville, Alabama. Seven white men, armed with knives and shotguns, ordered the young woman into their green Chevrolet, raped her, and left her for dead. The president of the local NAACP branch office sent his best investigator and organizer to Abbeville. Her name was Rosa Parks. In taking on this case, Parks launched a movement that ultimately changed the world.

The author gives us the never-before-told history of how the civil rights movement began; how it was in part started in protest against the ritualistic rape of black women by white men who used economic intimidation, sexual violence, and terror to derail the freedom movement; and how those forces persisted unpunished throughout the Jim Crow era when white men assaulted black women to enforce rules of racial and economic hierarchy. Black women’s protests against sexual assault and interracial rape fueled civil rights campaigns throughout the South that began during World War II and went through to the Black Power movement. The Montgomery bus boycott was the baptism, not the birth, of that struggle.

At the Dark End of the Street describes the decades of degradation black women on the Montgomery city buses endured on their way to cook and clean for their white bosses. It reveals how Rosa Parks, by 1955 one of the most radical activists in Alabama, had had enough. “There had to be a stopping place,” she said, “and this seemed to be the place for me to stop being pushed around.” Parks refused to move from her seat on the bus, was arrested, and, with fierce activist Jo Ann Robinson, organized a one-day bus boycott.

The protest, intended to last twenty-four hours, became a yearlong struggle for dignity and justice. It broke the back of the Montgomery city bus lines and bankrupted the company.

We see how and why Rosa Parks, instead of becoming a leader of the movement she helped to start, was turned into a symbol of virtuous black womanhood, sainted and celebrated for her quiet dignity, prim demeanor, and middle-class propriety—her radicalism all but erased. And we see as well how thousands of black women whose courage and fortitude helped to transform America were reduced to the footnotes of history.

Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street provides an excellent examination of the Civil Rights Movement and the history of sexual assault against black women. Assistant Professor of History at Wayne State University, McGuire analyzes the ritualization of sexual assault and its use as a weapon to maintain white superiority. McGuire has successfully written a compelling and thought-provoking work that truly adds another dimension to the study of the Civil Rights Movement.
McGuire brilliantly opens the book with the story of Recy Taylor, effectively grabbing the attention of the reader and setting the tone for the remainder of the work. By beginning the narrative with such a horrific event, McGuire drives home the reality of life for African American women during the Jim Crow era. As scaring and horrific as sexual assault truly is, during this time period it was effectively weaponized. It became a weapon of the white male patriarchy to use in its war against the black population. This was a way to maintain white superiority and break the spirit of African American women. It was a weapon of fear, which was terrible, yet effective.
In At the Dark End of the Street, McGuire discusses how African American women physically defended themselves against their attackers. Those who killed their attackers were often charged with murder even though they were acting in self-defense. It was important for the NAACP and other organizations to play an active role in the advocacy of these victims. One such advocate/investigator was Rosa Parks, a woman who is generally only thought of as an elderly woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus. As McGuire shows, she was much more than that.
At the Dark End of the Street is an excellent work that examines a tremendously understudied aspect of the Civil Rights Movement. McGuire has crafted a compelling narrative that engrosses the reader and shines light upon a truly dark time. This book is an invaluable addition to the existing historiography and forces the reader to rethink what they know about the Civil Rights Movement.

This REALLY needs to be made into a movie.

Seriously. Out of all of the history books that i read in high school and in the libraries, this was the only one that actually CLICKED for me. The rampant rape of black women throughout slavery and the Jim Crow Era has always been ignored or quickly dismissed in historical books before but this great author made sure to NOT do that! I love her for that! This book needs to be made into a movie one day! This will be the first time where our stories will be told thoroughly.

I watched The Help, and it failed to mention the sexual assaults and rapes that the black women suffered. Although i enjoyed the movie somewhat, i was still disappointed because they refused to let our REAL stories get told. You can't have a good story set in the Jim Crow era without telling the rampant rapes of black women by white men and other men. It's part of our history. Whether many people want to admit it or not!

This Book Will Change Your Life or at Least Your Perspective

This was an excellent book. I read it for a Women's Studies course and am so glad I did. It is a hard read at times due to the subject matter and I got chills over and over with every page I turned. This is a dense read so full of information, facts, and, the best part in my opinion, stories that hit you straight in your emotions (I am not ashamed to admit I got a little teary eyed at times). The Civil Rights Movement in the US is definitely taken for granted and has been whittled down to little bites of history where MLK Jr. is glorified and positioned as the center piece but if you read this book you'll learn there was so so much more to it and that once again history bears its burden on the backs of so many brave black women.

Great Resource for Leaders at All Levels

As a consultant and educator, I've used this book for many years and am very pleased with the new edition. This edition stream-lined format and added content is extremely useful in planning effective meetings whether a one-hour staff meeting, a conference call, or a full day strategic planning session. Sample surveys, checklists and observation sheets are well designed for ease of use and replication. Facilitating effective meetings is a core competency in my graduate leadership course and students have found this book very helpful. One assignment student observation and assessment of a meeting using the core practices observation sheet and meeting effectiveness survey. Not surprisingly, they are usually disappointed in the inefficiency of the meeting they observe, but they acquire a new appreciation for the skills involved in truly involving participants in decision making and their recommendations for improvement reflect this. The tools in this book help observers focus on important facilitation behaviors that they may not otherwise know to look for. My colleagues comment on my ability to plan, organize and run effective committee meetings including face-to-face, conference call and web-based. Perhaps, the most important lesson learned from my many years of using this book is the appreciation of the importance of effective facilitation skills for leaders at all levels.

Great resource

For any one who does facilitiating even if just running internal meetings, this is a good resource to have. Even if you are an experienced facilitator, a good tool to have for reviewing ideas and differents approaches from time to time. Not cheap but I am guessing the revisions have added a lot to this book (I bought the third edition). Not something I am going to sit down and read the whole thing but both my wife and I have been using it from time to time (we're both consultants) and getting through decision meetings and other sessions with groups can be tricky at times. Always possible to learn new things and this book should help even if you already know many of the ideas. We found it at the library and got tired of renewing, returning and checking it out again and wanted to have a readily available copy.

Everything I needed to know but didn't get in kindergarten!

I have been teaching and practicing facilitation in a large healthcare organization for about 12 years. This book (in earlier and now the current edition)has been a staple for my own,as well as our learners', development as facilitators and Organizational Development professionals. The layout and organization of the topics and related skills is intuitive and geared for the practicing professional. It's not a cover to cover read...certainly not meant as a textbook for the aspiring theorist. It is a practical guide for getting work done in ways that bring people together to produce great results, and builds ownership along the way. I highly recommend this to anyone, novice or expert, interested in developing others or as a resource for your own work.

When Ishi, "the last wild Indian," came out of hiding in August 1911, he was quickly whisked away by train to San Francisco to meet Alfred Kroeber, one of the fathers of American anthropology. Sackman adds to the extensive writings on Ishi, the last survivor of the Yahi tribe of Northern California, by delving into the unique relationship between the “wild” man and Alfred Kroeber, head of the Museum of Anthropology at Berkeley. With the Sierra Club, Kroeber and Ishi took nature walks around San Francisco, and Ishi shared his knowledge of the artifacts at the museum with his mentor, who had him installed there as a janitor. Three years after emerging from the wild in 1911, Ishi joins Kroeber and others for a three-week tour of his former homeland, which proved to be an emotional visit as it now seemed to be a strange and lonely place. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915 is a symbolic moment as Ishi appears with a Blackfeet group as their guest of honor, and Kroeber bristles at ethnographic displays he described as of the “cheap show variety.” The encounter between these two men “embodied the whole story of the American frontier,” Sackman maintains, a story still debated today. --Deborah Donovan

Wild Men is terrific

Sackman has taken a well know story and crafted it into a marvelous excursion into the lives of two fascinating individuals. Along the way his story takes many highways and byways, bringing together a wealth of information and insights into turn-of-the century San Francisco,, native American history, the study of anthropology, train travel, and so much more. A fascinating read, highlighted by numerous photos.

A study of the post-captive (albeit voluntary) life of Ishi.

Not what I had hoped, but excellent nonetheless. A fine homage to a human being who had reached the end of his ability to live and thrive in his lifelong environment and ventured into a world beyond his comprehension, yet in spite of language and cultural barriers managed to teach what he knew to the extent of his ability. Well worth reading just for the shift in paradigm between two cultures, in my opinion.

About the Author
Gustave LeBon (1841-1931) was a French physician who wrote widely on scientific subjects, including anatomy and physiology, anthropology, and history. Why I Avoid Large Groups of People.

_The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind_ by French social theorist Gustave LeBon is a short treatise on the principles of large gatherings of people. As the disclaimer on the title page notes, the ideas in LeBon's book were popular at the time of the late 19th century but are no longer in vogue today. The reasons for this are obvious, as LeBon unpretentiously puts to fault all the rhetoric about "democracy," "equality," "fraternity," and "equality" as being mere catchphrases that self-serving demagouges use to control the spirit of the masses. He cites the French Revoloution and the demands of Socialism and Communism during his time. LeBon outlines the way crowds tend to think (in vivid images illogically connected), how they reason (they don't for all practical purposes), how they express exaggerated emotion, how they are very quick to take action without coherent thought and of the general extreme-conservativism and intolerance of crowds. The individual who becomes part of a crowd tends to loose himself, and feels invincible as he is aware of the similarity of mind and purpose of all those surrounding him. LeBon notes how individuals become unthinking entities of the Herd, and can be unconsciously made to do acts, which can either be of great criminality or heroism. The reasoning of the solitary individual is superior to that of a crowd which has no individuality. All are "equal" in a crowd where, for instance, a mathemetician is caught up in the same spirit as a laborer and class and intelligece differences fall to the lowest common denominator. One advangage of crowds is that they can express the spirit of a class, caste, or race of a people better than the individual can, and that crowds are capable of great deeds such as victory in a war or the spread of a religion that would be beyond simply one person's effort. The back title of _The Crowd_ mentions that Hitler, Mussolini in addition to Freud were familiar with LeBon's work, and it is readily apparent that their followers acted very similar to the behavior that LeBon describes. The basic point of _The Crowd_ is this: For Bettor or Worse, Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid People in Large Groups.

I think the reviewer Derek Pillion summed up this book rather well. But I want to relate something that came into my mind after reading the following passage from chapter III:
"A hundred petty crimes or petty accidents will not strike the imagination of crowds in the least, whereas a single great crime or a single great accident will profoundly impress them, even though the results be infinitely less disastrous than those of the hundred small accidents put together.
The epidemic of influenza, which caused the death but a few years ago of five thousand persons in Paris alone, made very little impression on the popular imagination. The reason was that this veritable hecatomb was not embodied in any visible image, but was only learnt from statistical information furnished weekly.
An accident which should have caused the death of only five hundred instead of five thousand persons, but on the same day and in public, as the outcome of an accident appealing stronly to the eye, by the fall for instance of the Eiffel Tower [sic], would have produced, on the contrary, an immense impression on the imagination of the crowd.
... To know the art of impressing the imagination of crowds is to know at the same time the art of governing them."
What came into my mind after reading that passage? Airplanes and collapsing towers. This book is a must read for any thinking person.

More insightful than Macchiavelli

This is a short book whose pages have a far greater impact than the title might suggest. As many reviewers have already noted, the book simply explains the mechanisms that guide the popualr imagination and outlines the simple principles that enable the few who grasp them to hold control over vast populations. What struck me particulalry was how the recipes for power suggested by Gustave Le Bon are reflected in contemporary neo-liberal economic and socio-cultural agendas. Those who are involved in developing education policies will find the book especially useful. Writing over a century ago,Le Bon criticized the liberal education system and advocated the more common sense practical type of learning that neo-liberal agendas have been pushing for since the late 70's. It also makes a strong case for the impact of simple messages over crowds. Common sense arguments, logic and thoughtful concerns, LE Bon argues, are lost on the masses. Indeed, it is widely believed that this was one of Benito Mussolini's favorite books. We are living ever more in an era of simplistic thinking. By reading this book you will understand how this has occurred and how demagogues rise to power. As with another reviewer, I also stay away from crowds. This book unraveled the unconscious instincts that always make me avoid crowds and anything that is too popular.

My name is Rosemary Talon, Lieutenant with GEK Special Forces but everyone calls me Ro. Sleeping beauty below me is Zulla, my very own kaiju. She had a long flight from Texas to Florida and I was spending quality time keeping tabs on her. I have only been a GEK pilot for two months and to say the experience was unusual is an understatement. Zulla and I were being shuttled around from base to base so we could train in different combat environments. It was essential training because when rogue kaiju attack, you had to be ready in almost any battleground. We were at the last stage of this particular training, marsh and swamp combat.
It was late afternoon and the heat of the day was in full force. Commander Frost, my direct report, thought it would be a nice change of pace if Zulla and I had the afternoon off. So here I was, watching my dear Zulla sleep while I tried to not think about anything in particular. It was the first break I had in months and it was nice to blank out for a while.
Zulla lay in a climate controlled hanger. She measured about 250 feet long with a strikingly feminine figure, her green scaly skin reflecting iridescent shine in the medium lighting. Her tail lay limply to the side. Her face was a smooth emerald color with small black horns protruding just below her hair line. I smiled again when I looked at what everyone called her hair. Her head was covered in small, black cable like dreadlocks. It gave her a powerful appearance when she was up and walking around. But now, they just splayed all over the concrete floor as soldiers kept themselves from tripping over the ends.
In another life, I might have found it ridiculous that Zulla was wearing a bathing suit. Well, it was more like a bikini. The top brass insisted that male and female GEK’s must wear something to cover their naughty bits. It just wouldn’t do if air lifted GEK’s were flown over towns and cities completely naked. We had to think about the children.
The temperature was cool in the hanger and I could see Zulla’s nipples poking up through the large amount of fabric covering them. I would have to talk to someone about raising the temperature just a little so she could sleep better. I would be lying if I didn’t have affection for my lizard princess. During training they encourage you to develop strong bonds with your GEK. Much like dog training in police departments, you function like a unit to the point where you don’t know where you begin and they end. For the time you are together, you are family.

Larger than life story

Wow! In just a short story Eden has crafted an incredibly unique world which (in my humble opinion) could be explored as a full length novel. Kaiju Seduction is giving us just one slice of this universe. When I initially started reading this story I thought perhaps is was not really an erotica; however, it did not take much time for me to realize this was not true. For those of you who like larger-than-life stories, you will find this is an interesting twist on the genre.

Not only do they provide a natural discrete analogue to the smooth manifolds on which physical theories are typically formulated, but their appearance is rather often a consequence of an underlying structure which naturally calls into play non-trivial aspects of representation theory, of complex analysis and topology in a way which makes manifest the basic geometric structures of the physical interactions involved. Yet, in most of the existing literature, triangulated manifolds are still merely viewed as a convenient discretization of a given physical theory to make it more amenable for numerical treatment.

The motivation for these lectures notes is thus to provide an approachable introduction to this topic, emphasizing the conceptual aspects, and probing, through a set of cases studies, the connection between triangulated manifolds and quantum physics to the deepest.

As a ceramic artist and educator who has occasion to work with those in the architecture and design fields, this book is highly effective as both a primer to new technologies and as a teaching tool. The respective approach to the complexities of the ceramic medium is key to provide accurate information of an ancient material used in a quickly changing world of technological applications. The authors have, themselves, "gotten their hands dirty" through using ceramics in their own research as well as in the classroom and this shows in the clear and concise overview of the exciting role ceramics plays in contemporary architecture and interior design.
