Book Design Made Simple by Fiona Raven and Glenna Collett is an invaluable resource for would-be authors contemplating self-publishing. While it is true that anyone can self-publish a book, the reality is that there are many obstacles between the first words on the page and the first copy off the press. Book Design Made Simple is a logical, clearly-written guide to an efficient, organized self-publishing process. It contains practical technical information on how to use the industry-standard publishing platform InDesign to format and assemble a book, design advice to help the author create a polished, aesthetically-pleasing finished product, and a production blueprint to guide the author’s development efforts. I purchased a copy of Book Design Made Simple midway through my own self-publishing process and it has without a doubt helped me create a better-looking, more professional product.

This book will have you up and running in InDesign quickly and confidently

I was actually surprised how fantastic a resource (but now how beautifully designed) this book is. I had previously done my book design in Word and was tired of the hours I spent cursing up a blue streak to try to get that annoying son of a sea biscuit to behave. Never again.

This book had me up and running with a fully formatted fiction book in a few hours. Seriously, a few hours. AND, I have finally found the program that, with a little creative use of my new knowledge, let's me prepare a paperback and an ebook from the same file. No more exporting in html from Word and importing into Sigil. No more having to change two books if I have to make edits. Nice. I am now reformatting all of my books. If I wasn't also giving them a bit of a copyedit and converting the chapter titles to images, I'd have them formatted in an hour or two each. Since it's a series, I can just pull my styles in from the previous book, and I'm done!

Now, don't get the idea that InDesign will never do something untoward. You may have difficulties that the book doesn't immediately address. In that case, there's Google. Or just undo until the problem goes away. Then, go back to the section where you made the mistake and you can learn from your mistake where you varied from the instructions.

Great book for those just starting with InDesign. I had some hands-on help with InDesign and book design before I bought this book, and I found the material helped supplement and fill in the details and techniques I'd forgotten to write down, or that we didn't get to. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting into self-publishing. My first novella turned out fantastically!

Practical earthy wisdom anyone can benefit from

I've owned this book for a couple of years now and realized I never wrote a review. Ms Nichols' book isn't your typical self-help book that tries to cheer lead you into a new take on your life. So many of those feel either patronizing or phony and they just didn't *talk* to that inner part of me that I was trying to so hard to reach and change. Nichols' *talked* to that inner me with stories of her own life that are were so genuine I just couldn't help but relate to.

My life's history and circumstances are completely different from what Nichols grew up with, yet I felt like she was in the room listening and giving me some honest earthy wisdom to put to use. Her stories, how she tells them and what she learned from them, resonated strong and honest with me. Our lives are totally different, and yet the pain and challenges to our humanity were the same.

Too many books of this type preach the usual "be positive, smile and you will be happy" message and to be honest, that just doesn't hit the right notes for me. Nichols' does say the same thing, but it's less than 1/4 of the book. The rest is how to bounce back when you get beaten up, how to take your scars and use them to get stronger. It also teaches you to look at yourself and what you're doing or not doing that makes you unhappy by example. In a way, Ms Nichols is like that wise Grandmother we all wish we had who could gently knock some sense and perspective in your head.

I've owned this for a little over 2 years now, I reread it every 6 months or so and *still* get a "AHA!" from it. If I could I would give this woman the most embarrassing of hugs for the warmth, compassion and practical wisdom this book has given, and continues giving me.

In between, he discusses the role anarchism played in the avant-garde, Beat and counterculture movements, while also explaining its influence in the antiwar, antiracist and feminist movements....an important and useful work.

Being a reluctant member of civilised society and reliant on earning an income to feed, clothe and shelter myself, I’ve been forced to try my hand at a few career paths. I’ve cleaned bricks as well as dishes, both poorly. I completed a physiotherapy degree at Sydney Uni, but was unable to work in that capacity for too long. Noone ever told me it involved a hefty dose of touching up old ladies. Sure, they loved it, but I didn’t want to bathe my aching thumbs in ice every night purely for geriatric satisfaction. Around the age of 25 I sniffed out the eternal truth, there’s big money in the money game. There are no rules, brains or ethics, but there’s money…truckloads upon truckloads of easy money. I enrolled in a post grad finance course and lucked into commodities trading, pretending to understand not only what derivatives are, but also how to make money trading the things. I graduated from derivatives to physical oil; slippery, slimy, glorious oil. Slippery is my attempt to open up the world of oil trading and Southeast Asia. Both are hedonistic minefields where a moral compass is your biggest liability and the depravity of the human spirit is rubbed in your face all day, every day.

Funny and engaging debut novel.

This is an engaging and at times hilarious page-turner. I found myself at turns disgusted, amused and even faintly aroused by the actions of Flynn. However, you can't help but be blown along with the whirlwind adventures of the protagonist as he leaves behind his physiotherapy career for the heady heights of commodity trading in Asia, all thanks to an ever-so-slightly tenuous CV, a fortuitous phone call and the wherewithal to outwit the other greasy ladder-climbers encountered during the hiring process.

Throughout the hilarious adventures I flip-flopped from wanting to join in the decadent revelry to being happy I remain largely ignorant of many of the people and processes that involve sending money, as well as large quantities of oil and copper concentrates of questionable origin, around the world.

The writing is crisp and the book flies along at a fair pace. If I had one negative thing to say is that the ending felt perhaps a little rushed. But that could just be a side-effect of my disappoint at finishing this otherwise excellent book. That point alone however doesn't stop me giving this book a well-deserved 5 stars. I look forward to more offerings from the author in the future.

This book is an absolute ripper! It feels like a combination of Hunter S Thompson and Anthony Bourdain with a splash of early Marco Pierre White!

Flynn, aka Slippery, aka Liam Carroll is a very naughty boy! His journey through the seamy underworld of global commodities trading is a ribald 'hold onto your seats' rollicking yarn. Enjoy the journey through the seedy, booze filled trading culture in Singapore and Shanghai as Slippery is blooded from na�ve apprentice to global trader.

This is laugh out loud funny with a tight, well honed writing style that is very hard to put down.

About the Author
Robin Davidson-Arnott completed his Ph.D. in 1975 from the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto. He was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph in 1976, Associate Professor in 1980, and has served as Professor from 1988 onwards. He has been a member of the Task Force of the International Joint Commission (Canada/USA) Great Lakes Water Levels Reference Study Phase 1 (1987-9), and has been seconded as a Scientist to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Development of Ontario Shoreline Management Policy and Technical Guideline (1992-5), and to the International Joint Commission (Canada/USA) Upper Great Lakes Water Level Regulation Study (2007-11). He has worked as a consultant for a number of studies for Ontario Conservation Authorities and Parks, Canada, and been awarded the R. J. Russell Award from the Coastal and Marine Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers in 2000. His research interests are in coastal geomorphology - on beach and nearshore processes on sandy coasts, nearshore erosion of cohesive coasts, coastal saltmarshes, aeolian sediment transport and coastal dunes - and he has received continuous support in this from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for over 30 years. He has authored and co-authored many books and journal articles on the subject, including a contribution to Geomorphology and Global Environmental Change (Cambridge University Press, 2009).

Excellent reference book

This is an excellent textbook. It was recommended reading for a Coastal Geomorphology course that I took. It is a text that I will have on my library shelf forever. Excellent reference. The contributing authors in the book are extremely knowledgeable and the text is easily read and understandable. A very good book for the novice and experts alike.

Another Bellum Sisters HIT!!!!

I really do love this Series & this Author. The 1st book in this series was Awesome & the 2nd was freakin spectacular!! Willow was little spitfire, love her & Lyonis.......who does'nt love a smokin hott Alpha with a huge heart? This novel was non-stop action & sexual tension from start to finish. I love this cast of charaters. cant wait for lilly's story! Dont miss out on the series, its a must read & T.A. Grey should definitly be on your favorites list =D

I absolutly LOVE this author! I have read all her books in a week and cant wait for more! This is the second sister book and they just keep getting better! I love the turmoil within Willow and making a comitment with her Sexy shapshifter! I am like how the book focuses on more than one carecter love story and actually ties everyone together and keeps us up todate on the main caracters from the previus book! Again this is a great book that will keep you wanting more and I really recommend becoming freinds with T A Grey on facebook! Her interaction with you as a friend is amazing! Again You cant go wrong!
